At SKODA, the Volkswagen group's 2.0 TFSI, a 2 litre turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection and 16 valves, powers the Octavia II and Octavia III RS as well as the Superb II and Superb III, saloons and estates, from 2005 to 2024, from 200 to 280 hp, in its EA113 then EA888 generations.

The engine has 8 inlet valves, two per cylinder. Depending on the engine code, the original part is the 06D 109 601 M with a 33.9 mm head, or the 06K 109 601 and 06L 109 601 with a 33.85 mm head; all have a 6 mm stem and measure 104 mm. Remapped, fitted with a bigger turbo or sharper camshafts, an Octavia RS loads them far more than standard.

SUPERTECH and FERREA reinforced inlet valves

At every cycle the inlet valve opens to let fresh air in, closes by striking its seat and slides in its guide, dozens of times per second at high rpm. It runs between 400 and 550 °C, where standard chrome-silicon steel loses 50 % of its strength, from 500 MPa at 500 °C to 250 MPa at 600 °C.

SUPERTECH makes them in black nitride stainless steel with a dished head: nitriding makes the stem harder and slows its wear in the guide, and its single groove models have an undercut stem under the head. FERREA offers them in its Competition Plus series, which the maker gives as 20 % stronger when hot and under fatigue, with a seat that lasts 25 % longer.

In +1 mm size, SUPERTECH takes the head to 34.85 mm and FERREA to 34.9 mm, stem and length staying at standard size: the passage at the seat opens wider, the cylinders fill better and power rises, provided the inlet seats are cut to the new size.

    Valve guide

The 3 groove valves (VWIVN-1002T, FERREA) fit with original-type collets; the single groove ones (VWIVN-1002S, VWIVN-1004S) with single groove collets.

The +1 mm size (VWIVN-1004S, F2180P) needs inlet seats cut to 34.85 or 34.9 mm, to plan with the cylinder head rebuild.

Valve clearance is taken up by hydraulic tappets: no adjustment once the valves are changed.

    Technical guide

    Our brands

SUPERTECHSUPERTECH is a San Jose, California manufacturer that has designed racing valvetrain parts for more than thirty years, from valves to springs, retainers and guides. Its valves are drawn for each cylinder head, checked by ultrasound, X-ray and laser, and proven by engine builders on track as well as on the drag strip.
FERREAFERREA Racing Components was set up in 1978 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by two Argentinian engine builders. Its valves are forged in one piece from steel bar, then fully machined on CNC; they run in NASCAR and dragster engines.

    How to choose

The groove is the notch cut at the top of the stem: the collets sit in it to hold the valve.

    SizeStandard size
33.85 mm head (SUPERTECH) or 33.9 mm (FERREA), for seats still at factory size.
    +1 mm oversize
34.85 mm head (SUPERTECH) or 34.9 mm (FERREA): more air in, about 10 to 12 cfm per mm of head according to FERREA. Seats to be cut; also takes up seats already reground.

Original-type fitting, road use; new collets recommended.
    Single groove
Collets clamp the stem on one stronger groove: single groove collets required.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • Higher-lift camshafts or firmer springs
    • Raised rev limit
    • Fitting a supercharger or turbocharger
    • Cylinder head rebuilt for circuit, drift or rally use
    • Original valves marked, worn or already reground
