  • VW engines covered

The Volkswagen 2.0 8V, from the EA827 family, was fitted from the early 1990s into the 2010s to the Golf III and Vento, the Passat B3 and B4, the Corrado, then the Golf IV, Bora, New Beetle, Sharan and Polo IV. This naturally aspirated four-cylinder has only two valves per cylinder.

It therefore has 4 exhaust valves, part number 048 109 611 B: 32.9 mm head, 7.0 mm stem, 91.15 mm overall length. They are the parts that take the extra heat of a tuned engine.

    SUPERTECH reinforced exhaust valves

On a naturally aspirated 2.0 8V, the head metal of the exhaust valve reaches 760 to 870 °C; a turbo or a supercharger takes it beyond 1,000 °C. The head sheds about 75 % of its heat through the seat and 20 % through the guide. The original steel, taken from the EV8 family, drops from 550 MPa at 600 °C to 300 MPa at 800 °C: past that point the head overheats, fatigues, distorts and ends up leaking at the seat.

The four SUPERTECH part numbers on this page are in black nitrided stainless steel. Nitriding hardens the valve surface and limits stem wear in its guide; SUPERTECH describes them with a stem reduced under the head and a dished head.

The VWEVI-1015-4, VWEVN-1017-4 and VWEVN-1019-4 enlarge the head by 0.5, 1 and 2 mm (33.5, 34.0 and 35.0 mm). Burnt gases leave faster, the cylinder empties better and power increases; the exhaust seats are then machined to the new size.

The original collets can be refitted if their profile matches the groove of the SUPERTECH valve: check it before assembly.

With the VWEVN-1014-4 the seats stay at the original size; heads from 33.5 to 35.0 mm require the 4 exhaust seats to be recut.

The 7 mm stem is the same as on the original valve 048 109 611 B.

Important: one set of 4 covers a complete engine (one exhaust valve per cylinder). SUPERTECH lists the engine codes 2E, ABA, ADC, ADY, AEG, AEP, AGG, AKR, APK, AQY, ATU, AVH, AWF, AWG, AZG, AZH, AZJ, BEH, BEJ, BER, BEV, BHP, BHY, CBPA, CFEA, CKJA; the VWEVN-1019-4 also lists BDC and BGD, but not CKJA. The 2.0 8V fitted by Audi, SEAT and Skoda are not covered on this VW page.

    Don't forget the inlet valves

For a 2.0 8V with the cylinder head off, also think of the inlet valves and the valve stem seals.
