Reinforced Cometic head gasket, in MLS. Sold individually, two gaskets per engine.
The BMW S85B50 is the V10 petrol engine of 5.0 litres fitted to the BMW M5 (E60 and E61 Touring) and the BMW M6 (E63 coupé and E64 convertible). All of these models share the same original cylinder head gasket, fitted as one per cylinder bank.
This original gasket carries the part number 11 12 7 837 460, with a 92.8 mm bore and a thickness of 0.595 mm. The manufacturer does not state its construction (EPC designation: asbestos-free cylinder head gasket), and the engine takes two of them, one per cylinder bank. Rated for the original combustion pressure, it loses its hold as soon as that pressure rises: clamping load falls, the cylinder head lifts and coolant enters a cylinder.
A head gasket does not make the seal by itself: it holds because the fasteners press the head against the block. A composite gasket ends up crushed for good beyond 100 N/mm² of admissible stress, whereas the 301 stainless steel of MLS gaskets withstands 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and recovers its shape at every combustion.
This page brings together the part numbers of Cometic, an American racing manufacturer, in a single construction: MLS multi-layer steel. Gasket bores run from 93 to 94.5 mm, covering the standard block as well as the rebored block, and thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, enough to adjust the compression ratio without touching the pistons or the cylinder head. As a rule, the gasket bore chosen is at least 0.5 mm larger than the actual cylinder bore. Each part number is sold individually; the engine takes two gaskets, one per cylinder bank, so order the part number for each bank.

Gasket volume: the free space the gasket leaves above each cylinder. That space adds to the combustion chamber, so the larger it is, the lower the compression ratio. Only compare these values between gaskets of the same bore.
| Fasteners | Engines | Tightening torque |
| Original cylinder head bolts 11 12 7 838 831, M10 x 115 | S85B50 | 40 Nm, then 90°, then 90° |
Before assembly, check the flatness of the cylinder head and block with a straight edge, and have them skimmed if needed. These gaskets are fitted without sealant: Cometic supplies them already coated.
![]() | Cometic MLS A stack of stamped stainless steel layers, riveted together. The outer layers carry active beads around each cylinder and each fluid passage. Sealing needs only a moderate clamping load, and the bore distorts little. It is the versatile answer, from the prepared naturally aspirated engine to moderate forced induction. |
Gasket bore. The Cometic MLS comes in 93 mm (C4528) and 94.5 mm (C4529).
Thickness. The original gasket is 0.595 mm thick. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.
| Your goal | Thickness to choose |
| Keep the original compression ratio | 0.69 mm, the value closest to the original 0.595 mm |
| Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost height | 0.69 mm + what was removed |
| Forced induction build, lower the ratio | A thickness above 0.69 mm |
| Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratio | None: 0.69 mm, the thinnest offered, is already above the original 0.595 mm |
As no thickness offered is thinner than the original, the gasket does not bring the piston closer to the cylinder head: measuring piston protrusion with a dial gauge is therefore not required by the choice of gasket. As the engine takes two gaskets, one per cylinder bank, order the part number for each bank.

OEM part number: 11 12 7 837 460 (two gaskets per engine, one per cylinder bank).
Important: this engine takes two cylinder head gaskets, one per cylinder bank: order the part number for each bank. The part numbers on this page fit the S85B50 of the M5 and M6 only.
Where the standard gasket reaches its limit, a reinforced one holds: under higher combustion pressure it keeps its shape instead of being crushed.
Once power rises, whether through a turbo, a supercharger or a higher compression ratio, the head gasket becomes the first weak point of the top end. A reinforced gasket is then less a matter of comfort than of safety: it prevents the failure, and the head removal that follows.
