Kit of CA625+ ARP rod bolts replacing the original bolts on the OEM rods of the BMW S85B50 (M5 E60 E61, M6 E63 E64).
The BMW S85B50 is the naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V10 petrol engine (4,999 cc, 92 mm bore, 75.2 mm stroke) with 40 valves, fitted to the M5 (E60, E61) and the M6 (E63, E64). Built from 2004 to 2010, it produces 507 hp.
On the S85B50, the original connecting rod bolt carries BMW reference 11 24 7 834 522 (M9 x 1) and is fitted new, washed and oiled: the manufacturer specifies tightening to 6 Nm, then 20 Nm, then 130 degrees, with the sequence carried out three times and a loosening between each, which makes the bolt a single-use part.
Few parts of the bottom end work as hard as the rod bolt: at every revolution, it is what stops the cap from pulling away under the inertia loads of the rod and piston assembly. The original bolt is designed for stock power and is single-use.
This kit replaces the original rod bolts of the S85B50 with CA625+ ARP bolts with an M9 thread. Material of the CA625+ version: Custom Age 625+, a super-alloy rated by ARP at 260,000 to 280,000 psi typical tensile strength, with long fatigue life and high toughness, complete resistance to atmospheric corrosion and oxidation, and immunity to hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion. Factory-fitted fasteners usually fall into classes 10.9 and 12.9, with 150,800 to 176,900 psi minimum. The engine speed allowed by the CA625+ bolts goes up to 11,250 rpm (calculated estimate).
| Part number | Brand | Grade / material | Head | Thread | Under-head length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ARP-201-6002 | ARP | CA625+ | 12-point | M9 | Not published |
Assembly is done with ARP assembly grease, applied to the threads and under the bolt head.
ARP (Automotive Racing Products) came into being in the early 1970s, when Gary Holzapfel, who came from the aerospace industry, decided to tackle the engine failures caused in motorsport by inadequate fasteners. Today the brand produces thousands of part numbers in California for the cylinder head, the main bearings and the connecting rods, in materials suited to each application, with manufacturing known for its consistency.
| Brand | Model (chassis) | Engine code | Power | Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BMW | M5 (E60) | S85B50 | 507 hp | 2004-2009 |
| BMW | M5 Touring (E61) | S85B50 | 507 hp | 2007-2010 |
| BMW | M6 Coupé (E63) | S85B50 | 507 hp | 2005-2010 |
| BMW | M6 Convertible (E64) | S85B50 | 507 hp | 2006-2010 |
OEM reference (rod bolt): 11 24 7 834 522 (M9 x 1)
Tightened by torque then angle, the original rod bolt reaches its yield point and stays stretched for good. Reinforced and therefore stronger, the ARP CA625+ bolts withstand much higher engine speeds and inertia loads: the risk of a fastener-related failure falls, and with it the risk of an engine repair out of all proportion to the price of the kit.
To complete the bottom-end rebuild, we offer the connecting rod bearings intended for this engine.

Hot forged under considerable pressure, generally from 4340 steel, a forged rod has a denser and more uniform structure than a stock rod. Against the original rod, frequently made of sintered metal and optimised for production cost, it brings about +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and +19 to +37% fatigue strength: enough to build a reliable high-power engine on.
