Toyota engines covered

The 2T-C (1.6 litre) and 3T-C (1.8 litre) belong to Toyota's T family of 8-valve four-cylinders: their camshaft works the valves through tappets and shaft-mounted rocker arms. They are found in the Carina TA40 and TA47 and the Corolla TE31 and TE72.

Both engines share the same original exhaust valve, the 13715-25011, with a 36.0 mm head, an 8.0 mm stem and a length of 109.0 mm.

FERREA reinforced exhaust valves

In a naturally aspirated engine the exhaust head heats up to 760 to 870 °C metal temperature; with a turbo it exceeds 1,000 °C. The seat drains about 75 % of the heat, the guide about 20 %. To put it in perspective, an EV8 family steel drops from 550 MPa at 600 °C to 300 MPa at 800 °C: an overheated head distorts and the valve no longer closes cleanly.

For these two engines FERREA supplies a Competition Plus valve in stainless steel, whose chrome stem gives a hard surface against friction in the guide. The manufacturer credits this range with 20 % more hot strength and 25 % more seat life.

At 39 mm, the head of the F1433P is 3 mm larger than that of the 13715-25011 (36.0 mm); its length is 108.9 mm against 109.0 mm.

Exhaust valve technical specifications

The F1433P is sold as a set of 4, one exhaust valve for each of the four cylinders.

Valve fitting

Make sure the original 90913-03005 collets suit the groove of the F1433P before refitting the springs.

A 39 mm head in place of 36.0 mm means the exhaust valve seats of the cylinder head must be checked before fitting.

Both engines use the same 90913-03005 collets; the 3T-C adds the 90913-02058 valve stem seal to the 90913-02023 and 90913-02024.
