  • The AUDI engines covered

    The 2.7 T is Audi's 2,671 cc biturbo V6, with five valve per cylinder heads: three inlet, two exhaust. From 1997 to 2005 it powers the S4 B5, the RS4 B5, the A4 B5 2.7, the A6 C5 and the allroad C5, with 230 to 380 hp.

    The engine has 18 original 058 109 601 C inlet valves, the same as on the 1.8 T 20V: 26.9 mm head, 6 mm stem, 105.1 mm length. Under the pressure of two turbos, a remap, bigger turbos or sharper camshafts ask far more of them than standard use.

    SUPERTECH and FERREA reinforced inlet valves

    At high revs, each 2.7 T inlet valve lifts and lands back on its seat dozens of times a second, its stem sliding constantly in the guide, at 400 to 550 °C. In that range the original chrome-silicon steel drops from 500 MPa at 500 °C to 250 MPa at 600 °C: half of its strength, 50 %, is gone.

    SUPERTECH makes them in black nitride stainless steel: the hardened, smoother surface slows stem wear in the guide. FERREA offers them in its Competition Plus series, which the maker quotes as 20 % stronger when hot and under fatigue, with seat life up by 25 %.

    The +1 mm size enlarges the head from 26.9 to 27.9 mm without changing stem or length: air flows better at the seat, the cylinder fills more and the engine gains power, once the inlet seats are cut to this size.

    The single groove valves AIVN-1103S-18 and AIVN-1106S-18 are fitted with SUPERTECH KPR-6S/7 collets. The 3 groove valves, AIVN-1103-18 and FERREA, take original-type collets.

    The +1 mm size (F1557P*18, AIVN-1106S-18) needs the inlet seats cut to 27.9 mm.

    SUPERTECHSUPERTECH has been designing racing valvetrain parts in San Jose, California, for more than three decades: valves, springs, retainers and guides. Its valves are drawn head by head, checked by ultrasound, X-ray and laser, then proven by engine builders on track and on the drag strip.
    FERREAFERREA Racing Components has worked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, since 1978, when two engine builders from Argentina founded the workshop. The company forges each valve in one piece from steel bar, then machines it end to end on CNC; its parts run in NASCAR and drag racing.

    How to choose

    The groove is the notch in the stem where the collets that hold the valve sit.
