Forerunner of the 22R, the 20R is a 2.2 litre four-cylinder with 8 valves and a single overhead camshaft that opens the valves through a shaft of screw-adjusted rocker arms. Toyota fitted it to the Celica RA42, the Corona RT105 and the Coaster RB11 minibus.

Its 4 original exhaust valves carry the part numbers 13715-38011 and 13715-38050 and a 7.97 to 7.98 mm stem; the head has to shed the heat of long periods under load, on the road as well as in passenger transport.

FERREA reinforced exhaust valves

The metal of an exhaust head reaches 760 to 870 °C in a naturally aspirated engine, and more than 1,000 °C with a turbo. Nearly 75 % of that heat leaves through the seat, 20 % through the guide. As a benchmark, an EV8 family steel keeps 550 MPa at 600 °C but only 300 at 800 °C; beyond that the head fatigues, cups and loses its seal.

The FERREA valve offered here belongs to the Competition Plus range: stainless steel, with a chrome stem that hardens the surface rubbing in the guide. For this range FERREA quotes 20 % higher hot strength and 25 % longer seat life.

The F1435P has a 38 mm head and a length of 113.3 mm.

Exhaust valve technical specifications

A set of 4 F1435P replaces one exhaust valve per cylinder.

Valve fitting

Check the original 90913-03005 collets against the groove of the F1435P before any reassembly.

Measure the head of the removed valve and check the exhaust valve seats before fitting a 38 mm head.

Compare the 113.3 mm length with that of the removed original valve before adjusting the rocker arms.
