The Z22SE is a 2.2 litre four-cylinder with 16 valves and twin overhead camshafts, from the General Motors Ecotec family. Opel fitted it from 2000 to 2008 to the Astra G, Vectra B and C, Zafira A and the Speedster roadster.

Each cylinder has two inlet valves, 8 per engine. Tuning (sharper camshafts, higher revs, a supercharger or turbo) increases the impact on the seats and the heat in the heads.

FERREA and SUPERTECH reinforced inlet valves

On the Z22SE, every inlet valve rises and drops back relentlessly as the revs soar, so that fresh air can reach the cylinder. Each closing drives its head into the seat, and its stem keeps gliding along the guide. It operates between 400 and 550 °C; yet at those temperatures an ordinary chrome-silicon steel goes from 500 MPa at 500 °C to only 250 MPa at 600 °C, just above, a 50 % loss. A more aggressive cam, a higher spring rating, extra revs or a supercharger or turbo amplify shocks, friction and heat.

FERREA supplies its Competition Plus series for this engine: a heat-resistant stainless with a chromed stem that slides better in the guide; it handles high temperatures and fatigue 20 % better and extends seat life by 25 %. SUPERTECH offers a black-nitrided stainless valve, a treatment that hardens the stem surface and slows its wear against the guide. Two finishes are therefore available for the Z22SE: FERREA's chromed stem or SUPERTECH's black nitriding, each with its own range of standard or enlarged sizes.

Two enlarged heads exist, the stem staying at 5.97 mm: 35.6 mm (+0.5 mm, SUPERTECH) and 36.1 mm (+1 mm, FERREA), versus 35.1 mm at standard size. Air passes more freely at the seat, each cylinder takes in more charge and the engine benefits, provided the 8 inlet seats are recut to that diameter.

The SUPERTECH GIVN-0012S-8 has a single groove: it is fitted with single groove collets. When refitting, check that the collets sit properly in the groove and replace worn ones.

The F1963P fits on reground original seats; the GIVN-0012S-8 and F1964P require the 8 inlet seats to be machined to 35.6 or 36.1 mm.

    Technical guide

    The brands offered

FERREAFERREA Racing Components opened its doors in 1978 in Florida, at Fort Lauderdale, started by a pair of Argentine-born engine builders. Its valves, each forged as a single piece from bar and then wholly CNC machined, power NASCAR, dragster and circuit engines.
SUPERTECHSUPERTECH Performance is based in San Jose, California, where it has made racing valves, springs, retainers and guides for more than thirty years. Each batch passes ultrasound, radiography and laser inspection, and every part number is developed engine by engine with tuners.

    How to choose

Cut at the stem end, the groove supports the collets, which hold the retainer in place. On the Z22SE, first pick the head size, then the brand and its finish.

    CriterionOption 1Option 2
    SizeStandard size, 35.1 mm
For inlet seats kept at factory dimension, simply refaced during the overhaul. Offered by FERREA in Competition Plus, it fits without machining to a new diameter.
Enlarged heads, 35.6 or 36.1 mm
A wider opening at the seat admits extra air, by 10 to 12 cfm for each mm of head, which lifts power output. The 8 seats are cut to the chosen diameter, a way also to rescue previously reground seats.
    BrandFERREA Competition Plus
Heat-resistant stainless and a chromed stem that glides better in its guide, in two sizes: standard (35.1 mm) or +1 mm (36.1 mm). On reassembly, check that the collets sit properly in the grooves and replace any worn ones.
    SUPERTECH
Black-nitrided stainless, a single groove, 35.6 mm head (+0.5 mm) and 102.05 mm length. It is fitted with single groove collets, which clamp the stem and relieve the groove: an arrangement designed for hard-pushed engines, on circuit as in rally.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • Camshaft with higher lift, stiffened return springs
    • Maximum revs pushed up
    • Forced induction added, supercharger or turbo
    • Head reworked for circuit, hillclimb or rally
    • Tired original valves or seats already reground
