Volkswagen developed the 2.0 TFSI, a 2 litre turbocharged four-cylinder with direct injection and 16 valves, in two generations, EA113 then EA888. From 2004 to the present day it powers the Golf V, VI and VII GTI and R, the Scirocco III, Passat B6 to B8, CC, Jetta, Eos, Beetle, Tiguan, Sharan, Polo R WRC, T-Roc R and Atlas, from 170 to 360 hp.

There are 8 inlet valves per engine, two per cylinder: 06D 109 601 M with a 33.9 mm head or, depending on the engine code, 06K 109 601 and 06L 109 601 with a 33.85 mm head, all with a 6 mm stem and 104 mm length. On a remapped Golf GTI or R, with a bigger turbo or sharper camshafts, they work far beyond the use planned at the factory.

SUPERTECH and FERREA reinforced inlet valves

The inlet valve opens at every cycle for fresh air, settles back onto its seat and slides in its guide, dozens of times per second at high rpm. Its working temperature runs from 400 to 550 °C: standard chrome-silicon steel loses 50 % of its strength there, 500 MPa at 500 °C against 250 MPa at 600 °C.

At SUPERTECH they are cut from black nitride stainless steel with a dished head; the treatment hardens the stem and slows its wear in the guide, and the single groove part numbers have an undercut stem under the head. At FERREA, the maker quotes the Competition Plus series as 20 % stronger when hot and under fatigue, with a seat that lasts 25 % longer.

The +1 mm size enlarges the head to 34.85 mm (SUPERTECH) or 34.9 mm (FERREA) without changing stem or length: air flows better at the seat, the cylinders fill more and power rises, once the inlet seats are cut to this size.

Fitting details

The 3 groove valves (VWIVN-1002T, FERREA) keep original-type collets; the single groove valves (VWIVN-1002S, VWIVN-1004S) are fitted with single groove collets.

The +1 mm size (VWIVN-1004S, F2180P) goes on inlet seats cut to 34.85 or 34.9 mm, to plan during the cylinder head rebuild.

Hydraulic tappets compensate valve clearance: no adjustment after replacing the valves.

	SUPERTECH, in San Jose, California, has made valvetrain parts for racing for more than thirty years: valves, springs, retainers, guides. Each valve is born for a specific cylinder head, passes ultrasound, X-ray and laser checks, then proves itself with engine builders on track and on the drag strip.
	FERREA Racing Components started in 1978 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with two Argentinian engine builders. The company forges each valve in one block from steel bar, then machines it entirely on CNC; its valves run in NASCAR and dragster engines.

How to choose

The groove is the notch at the top of the stem in which the collets hold the valve.
