The S54B32 is the last naturally aspirated straight-six developed by BMW's M division. This 3,246 cc unit (87 mm bore, 91 mm stroke), with double overhead camshafts and 24 valves, combines six individual throttle bodies and the double-VANOS system to deliver 343 hp at 7,900 rpm, with a redline close to 8,000 rpm. Its specific output is around 105 hp per litre, a benchmark for a production naturally aspirated engine. Built from 2000 to 2008, it powers the M3 (E46), the M3 CSL (360 hp), the Z3 M and the Z4 M.
Built around a forged crankshaft and a high-rigidity block, the S54B32 revs very high and withstands heavy mechanical loads. Under tuning, sustained high-rpm use, increased cylinder pressure or a forced-induction conversion, the rotating assembly becomes the decisive link. Forged 4340-steel connecting rods then provide the strength margin needed to fully exploit the engine's potential in high-performance and competition use.
A forged connecting rod is shaped by compressing a billet of steel heated to high temperature: the metal grain follows the part's geometry, producing a dense, homogeneous rod free of porosity, far more durable than a cast or sintered rod. Precision-machined, shot-peened and balanced, the rods offered here ship as a complete set, ready to fit, with ARP hardware included. They push back the limits of engine speed and cylinder pressure while securing bottom-end reliability.

Manufacturers recommend the stretch-gauge method as the reference: the instructions supplied with the kit always prevail. The torque figures assume assembly with ARP lubricant.

| Measuring bolt stretch is the most reliable way to guarantee correct preload, as it is unaffected by thread friction. A dedicated dial gauge fits onto the bolt and reads its actual elongation: tighten until you reach the stretch value recommended by the manufacturer. |
