Crankshaft thrust washers for the Toyota S, T and Y series engines.
The Toyota S, T and Y series engines (codes 1S, 2S, 3S-FC, 3S-FE, 3S-GE, 3S-GTE, 4S-FE, 5S-FE, T, 2T, 3T, 3T-G, 3T-GTE, 12T, 13T, 1Y, 2Y, 3Y, 4Y, 2TJ) power the Toyota Celica, Carina ED, Corona, Camry, Caldina, MR2, RAV4 and Altezza, among others. The S-series engines, built from 1980 to 2007 from 1.8 to 2.2 litres, are inline four-cylinders with a cast-iron block and aluminium cylinder head; from the 3S onward, they have double overhead camshafts driven by a single timing belt.
Thrust washers take the clutch thrust and set the crankshaft end play. On a tuned engine with a reinforced clutch, this thrust increases. The uncoated ACL version restores the thrust washers to the original size. The King version, in lead-free Al20Sn1Cu aluminium, is certified by its manufacturer to meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.
These half washers set the limits of the crankshaft's movement along its axis. They take the thrust transmitted by the clutch at every disengagement and must withstand it without seizing. As they wear, end float increases, the crankshaft gains movement and its thrust faces deteriorate.

Each half washer has a grooved face, which ensures its lubrication, and a plain face. The grooved face goes on the crankshaft side, the plain face on the block or cap side: fitted upside down, the washer no longer feeds oil to the crankshaft's thrust face, which deteriorates rapidly.
Coat the face turned towards the crankshaft with assembly grease, check that the half washers sit flush in the block, offer up the cap without forcing and tighten it as the manufacturer specifies. An end float check with a dial gauge, compared with the manufacturer's value, validates the assembly.

Replacing the thrust washers during a rebuild protects the crankshaft: worn half washers let end float grow, the crankshaft shifts under clutch thrust and its thrust faces wear until they need machining, or the crankshaft must be replaced. With an uprated clutch pushing harder, the replacement is all the more worthwhile.
