  • The Honda H22 engine (2.2 16V VTEC)

    The H22 is Honda's 2.2 L (2157 cc) 16-valve, twin-cam, VTEC four-cylinder, fully naturally aspirated. Built from 1992 to 2002 under the H22A and H22Z codes, it topped Honda's four-cylinder range of the era: the Prelude IV and Prelude V (BB chassis) and the European Accord VI Type R (CH1), with outputs from 185 to 220 hp depending on the year and a high redline, around 7,900 to 8,200 rpm. Its naturally aspirated efficiency, VTEC head and durability have made it one of the most sought-after tuning bases in the Honda world, whether for raised compression and engine management, turbo conversions or swaps. As soon as power, cylinder pressure and rpm rise, the factory sintered rods become the weak link of the rotating assembly. Replacing them with weight-matched forged rods is the first safeguard of a reliable, lasting H22.

    The forged connecting rods

    Drop-forged and precision-machined, these rods withstand bending, compression and fatigue loads far beyond those the factory sintered H22 rods tolerate. They suit every sporting use: circuit, time attack, drift, drag, rally and hillclimb. Depending on the build, they support a high-rpm naturally aspirated Stage 2 as readily as a Stage 3 or a Stage 4 pushed in compression and, where fitted, boost. Supplied as a complete set of 4, weight-matched, they preserve the balance of the rotating assembly and the high-rpm resistance typical of the VTEC head. All adopt the H22's 22 mm piston pin, for a center-to-center length close to 143 mm.

    Tightening torque and stretch

    Before closing up the H22 rotating assembly, every ARP bolt is degreased, visually inspected and coated with the assembly lubricant supplied with the kit: this preparation is what makes the tightening repeatable. Start by recording the free length of each bolt with a dial gauge, one at a time, then take the measurement again under load to read the actual stretch. The torque and stretch figures in the table are those specified by the bolt manufacturer, ARP 2000 or ARP L19 depending on the 3/8" variant, and must be followed scrupulously: stretch measured with the gauge remains the reference method, torque acting only as a cross-check. Mark the eight bolts so each one goes back on its own cap.

    Forged rods technical guide

    4340 forged steel

    These rods are forged from 4340 low-alloy nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, the benchmark for high-performance rods. Forged, then quenched and tempered, it keeps a continuous grain flow that gives high tensile strength and excellent fatigue life, two decisive qualities on a heavily stressed H22. Compared with a cost-optimised sintered factory rod, a forged 4340 rod gains about +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and +19 to +37% in fatigue endurance. It is this margin that lets a prepared H22 absorb VTEC over-revs and torque increases without breakage.

    The rod profile

    The range comes in two profiles: the H, by ZRP and Manley, and the reinforced I-beam I-HD, by Manley. The H remains the all-round choice for a naturally aspirated or mildly boosted H22; the I-HD targets hard turbo builds. The specification table gives, for each reference, the center-to-center length, big-end diameter, big-end width and weight.

    H profile:H profile: H-beam offering a large bearing surface and an excellent stiffness-to-weight balance; it is particularly suited to high-revving naturally aspirated engines such as the H22 and to moderate turbo builds, where its bending stability is valued.
    I-HD profile:I-HD profile: reinforced Heavy Duty I-beam (Manley Pro Series "Turbo Tuff"); its optimised section resists buckling under the heavy loads of a turbo or high-compression H22, for a weight/stiffness ratio aimed at the most demanding builds.

    How to choose your rod bolts? ARP

    ARPARP 2000: the all-round benchmark alloy, with a tensile strength of about 220,000 psi (1,517 MPa). Offered here in 3/8" diameter, it covers the vast majority of H22 builds, up to about 200 hp per cylinder, at speeds reaching 8,500 rpm. It is the default choice for a reliable H22, high-rpm naturally aspirated as much as mild turbo.
    ARPARP L19: a superior alloy (approx. 260,000 psi / 1,793 MPa), for the H22s most stressed in torque and rpm, up to about 250 hp per cylinder in 3/8". More sensitive to corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement, it must be oiled and stored with care.

    Four different rods are offered for this H22 and they do not all use the same bolt: ARP 2000 in 3/8"-38 mm on the Manley H and the ZRP H, ARP 2000 in 3/8"-41 mm on the Manley I-HD, ARP L19 in 3/8"-38 mm on the reinforced ZRP. The reference stretch therefore differs from one version to another, and it is stretch, not torque, that reflects the true preload: friction in the threads and under the seats makes the relationship between torque and tension vary. Measure the free length of every bolt with a dial gauge (stretch gauge), tighten in passes with assembly lubricant, then measure again up to the figure given by the bolt manufacturer, repeated in the table above. As this engine revs high, that measurement is the best guarantee of long-term reliability.

    The brands offered

    This H22 range brings together two race forged-rod manufacturers. ZRP precision-machines and weight-matches its rods, in the H profile for the H22. Manley, a leading American brand, offers both the H and the Pro Series I-HD "Turbo Tuff" line proven on heavily prepared engines. Each reference ships as a complete set of 4, with its dedicated ARP bolts.

    Manley has specialised in forged connecting rods in the United States since 1966. The body starts from aerospace 4340 steel, vacuum-degassed, shot-peened and then checked unit by unit before being weight-matched. The H22 gets two designs: the very sturdy H profile and the lighter, reinforced-section I-HD profile; both come with ARP 2000 bolts.
    ZRP comes from Athens, where Alex Drakos designs and produces the whole range. For the H22 the rod is forged in 4340 steel and then fully machined; the four pieces in a set are weighed and matched to ±1 g, which matters on a naturally aspirated unit that lives at high engine speeds. The H profile is offered with ARP 2000 or ARP L19 bolts. Engineering and final inspection stay in Greece, backed by experience in rallying, on track and in drift.

    Why is it the most economical solution?

    A set of forged rods costs vastly less than a blown engine: on an H22 pushed in compression, rpm or boost, a factory rod that lets go takes out the block, the crankshaft and often the VTEC head. By fitting weight-matched forged rods from the outset, you make your build reliable for the long term and spare yourself a full rebuild, for a negligible extra cost next to the price of a new engine.
