The H22 is Honda's 2.2 L (2157 cc) 16-valve, twin-cam, VTEC four-cylinder, fully naturally aspirated. Built from 1992 to 2002 under the H22A and H22Z codes, it topped Honda's four-cylinder range of the era: the Prelude IV and Prelude V (BB chassis) and the European Accord VI Type R (CH1), with outputs from 185 to 220 hp depending on the year and a high redline, around 7,900 to 8,200 rpm. Its naturally aspirated efficiency, VTEC head and durability have made it one of the most sought-after tuning bases in the Honda world, whether for raised compression and engine management, turbo conversions or swaps. As soon as power, cylinder pressure and rpm rise, the factory sintered rods become the weak link of the rotating assembly. Replacing them with weight-matched forged rods is the first safeguard of a reliable, lasting H22.
Drop-forged and precision-machined, these rods withstand bending, compression and fatigue loads far beyond those the factory sintered H22 rods tolerate. They suit every sporting use: circuit, time attack, drift, drag, rally and hillclimb. Depending on the build, they support a high-rpm naturally aspirated Stage 2 as readily as a Stage 3 or a Stage 4 pushed in compression and, where fitted, boost. Supplied as a complete set of 4, weight-matched, they preserve the balance of the rotating assembly and the high-rpm resistance typical of the VTEC head. All adopt the H22's 22 mm piston pin, for a center-to-center length close to 143 mm.

Before closing up the H22 rotating assembly, every ARP bolt is degreased, visually inspected and coated with the assembly lubricant supplied with the kit: this preparation is what makes the tightening repeatable. Start by recording the free length of each bolt with a dial gauge, one at a time, then take the measurement again under load to read the actual stretch. The torque and stretch figures in the table are those specified by the bolt manufacturer, ARP 2000 or ARP L19 depending on the 3/8" variant, and must be followed scrupulously: stretch measured with the gauge remains the reference method, torque acting only as a cross-check. Mark the eight bolts so each one goes back on its own cap.

These rods are forged from 4340 low-alloy nickel-chromium-molybdenum steel, the benchmark for high-performance rods. Forged, then quenched and tempered, it keeps a continuous grain flow that gives high tensile strength and excellent fatigue life, two decisive qualities on a heavily stressed H22. Compared with a cost-optimised sintered factory rod, a forged 4340 rod gains about +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and +19 to +37% in fatigue endurance. It is this margin that lets a prepared H22 absorb VTEC over-revs and torque increases without breakage.
The range comes in two profiles: the H, by ZRP and Manley, and the reinforced I-beam I-HD, by Manley. The H remains the all-round choice for a naturally aspirated or mildly boosted H22; the I-HD targets hard turbo builds. The specification table gives, for each reference, the center-to-center length, big-end diameter, big-end width and weight.

A set of forged rods costs vastly less than a blown engine: on an H22 pushed in compression, rpm or boost, a factory rod that lets go takes out the block, the crankshaft and often the VTEC head. By fitting weight-matched forged rods from the outset, you make your build reliable for the long term and spare yourself a full rebuild, for a negligible extra cost next to the price of a new engine.
