  • FORD engines covered

The 2.5 litre turbocharged inline five-cylinder 20-valve engine, designed by Volvo, powers the Ford Focus II ST (engine code HYDA, 225 hp) and the Focus II RS (code JZDA, 305 hp, 350 hp on the RS 500). In Australia, it is fitted to the Focus XR5 Turbo and RS.

This engine has 10 inlet valves, two per cylinder. A remap, a bigger turbo, sharper camshafts or higher revs subject them to more heat, harder impacts on the seat and more friction in the guide than they were designed for.

    SUPERTECH reinforced inlet valves

On every cycle, the inlet valve opens to let in the air compressed by the turbo, closes by striking its seat and slides in its guide, dozens of times per second at high rpm. Its working temperature lies between 400 and 550 °C. A common chrome-silicon steel loses half its strength there: 500 MPa at 500 °C, 250 MPa at 600 °C, i.e. 50 % less.

SUPERTECH forges these valves from EV8 (21-4N) stainless steel: 650 MPa at 500 °C, 30 % more than chrome-silicon steel, and 550 MPa at 600 °C, 120 % more. Black nitriding hardens the surface and makes it slicker, which reduces wear on the stem and the guide.

The +1 mm oversize enlarges the head from 31 to 32 mm without changing the stem or the length: the passage at the seat widens, the cylinders fill better and the engine gains power, provided the cylinder head seats are cut to this diameter.

These valves have 3 grooves with an MK6H profile and are fitted with collets of this profile.

The +1 mm oversize requires cylinder head seats cut to the diameter of the new head, a job to plan with the cylinder head rebuild.

    Technical guide

    The brand offered

SUPERTECHSUPERTECH is a Californian manufacturer based in San Jose that has been designing competition valves, springs and pistons for more than 30 years. Each valve is drawn for a specific engine, then checked by ultrasound, X-ray and laser before being proven by race engine builders.

    How to choose

Both references have 3 grooves; the choice is about the size, that is the head diameter.

    CriterionOption 1Option 2
    SizeStandard size
31 mm head, for a cylinder head whose inlet seats have not been reworked.
    +1 mm oversize
32 mm head: wider passage at the seat and better filling. Seats to be cut to the new size; also makes up for seats already ground.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • Remap with raised boost pressure
    • Bigger turbo or sharper camshafts
    • Raised maximum rpm
    • Cylinder head rebuilt for a circuit, rally or drift engine
    • Original valves marked, worn or already reground
