  • The Toyota engines covered

The Toyota 2ZZ-GE is the 1.8 litre, sixteen-valve, inline four-cylinder petrol engine fitted to the Celica (T23), Corolla (E12), Matrix (E13), Will VS and Pontiac Vibe in the compatibility table, as well as the Lotus Elise, Exige and 2 Eleven. The part numbers on this page are based on the original cylinder head gasket of this engine code.

This original gasket carries the part number 11115-22060. Toyota publishes neither the construction nor the thickness. It is rated for standard combustion pressure: once that pressure climbs, clamping load fades, the cylinder head lifts and coolant passes into a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

A head gasket does not seal on its own: the seal holds because the fasteners press the head against the block. A composite gasket stays permanently crushed beyond 100 N/mm² of admissible stress, whereas the 301 stainless steel of MLX gaskets withstands 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and regains its shape at every combustion.

This page gathers the part numbers of Cometic, an American maker of racing gaskets, in a single construction: the MLX with its chamber stopper. The gasket bore is 82.5 mm, 0.5 mm smaller than the original gasket, and thicknesses run from 0.71 to 1.22 mm, enough to adjust the compression ratio without touching the pistons or the cylinder head. As a rule, the gasket bore chosen is at least 0.5 mm larger than the actual cylinder bore. Each part number is sold individually, one gasket per engine.

Gasket volume is the free space the gasket leaves above each cylinder. It adds to the combustion chamber: the larger it is, the lower the compression ratio drops. Compare these values only between gaskets of the same bore.

Before fitting, check the flatness of the cylinder head and block with a straight edge, and have them skimmed if needed. These gaskets are fitted without sealant, since Cometic supplies them already coated.

    Technical guide

    The construction offered

Cometic MLX cylinder head gasketCometic MLX
A multi-layer stainless steel stack whose folded centre layer forms a stopper around the combustion chamber, with a high-temperature coating. Clamping rises locally without adding to bore distortion. It is the most resistant of the all-steel gaskets, to be chosen when boost becomes severe; it is offered here in 82.5 mm only.

    Choosing bore and thickness

Gasket bore. The Cometic MLX comes in 82.5 mm only.

Thickness. The thickness of the original gasket is not published by the manufacturer. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratio0.71 mm, the value closest to the original 0.52 mm
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost height0.71 mm + what was removed
Forced induction build, lower the ratioA thickness above 0.71 mm
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratioNo thickness below 0.71 mm, the thinnest offered

After skimming, or with a thinner gasket, use a dial gauge to measure how far the pistons protrude above the block: it sets the clearance that remains between piston and cylinder head.

    The brand

CometicCometic Gasket, Inc., founded in 1989 in Concord, Ohio, is an American maker of engine gaskets and sealing solutions. It is known for the gasket produced on request, in the bore and thickness wanted. All of its production stays in the United States, with American materials.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 83 mm bore of the original gasket covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

When the original gasket reaches its limit, the reinforced gasket takes over the load: under higher combustion pressure it keeps its shape instead of being crushed.

As power rises, through a turbo, a supercharger or a higher compression ratio, the head gasket is the first weak link of the top end. Choosing a reinforced gasket is a matter of safety more than comfort: it spares you the failure and the head removal that follows.
