Set of 8 reinforced exhaust valves for the Peugeot 1.6 16V TU5JP4.
At Peugeot, the 1,587 cc TU5JP4 powers the 206, 207 and 307 1.6 and 1.6 16V from 2000 to 2015, as well as the 1007 and the Partner, with 106 to 110 hp depending on version: a naturally aspirated four-cylinder with four valves per cylinder.
Its cylinder head carries 8 exhaust valves, two per cylinder, with original part number 0949.C5 or 0949.E0 depending on production date and version. Sharper camshafts, a raised rev limit or track use keep them longer in the stream of burnt gases.
On the TU5JP4, as soon as the exhaust valve lifts off its seat, it sits in gases that are still scorching, pushed into the manifold. Taken inside the metal, the head temperature sits at around 760 to 870 °C on this naturally aspirated 1.6 litre; with forced induction it would climb past 1,000 °C. The head gets rid of about 75 % of that heat through the seat and roughly 20 % through the guide. Yet an EV8 type steel, the benchmark used for the original part, copes with 550 MPa near 600 °C but only 300 near 800 °C. High revs or long full load spells: the metal tires, the head distorts, sealing fails.
A reinforced valve owes its endurance first to its alloy and to the condition of its surface. For this engine, SUPERTECH supplies both of its sets in a stainless steel built for high temperatures, then given a black nitride treatment. This nitrided skin, harder and smoother than bare metal, lowers friction between stem and bushing and slows wear on both parts. The CATCAMS 9249006M*8 set comes from a camshaft maker that matches its valves to its own lift profiles; it brings together eight valves, each 104.2 mm long on a 6 mm stem.
The two SUPERTECH valves share a 5.96 mm stem and a 104.4 mm length; only the head changes, 24.5 mm on the standard PEEVN-28604-8 and 25.5 mm on the PEEVN-28606-8. A wider head opens a larger outlet: the chamber starts emptying sooner, the next fresh charge fills the freed volume better and the engine pulls harder. The exhaust seats then go to the machinist to be opened up to 25.5 mm.
| Part number | Brand | Size | Head Ø | Stem Ø | Length | Grooves | Material |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PEEVN-28604-8 | SUPERTECH | Standard | 24.5 mm | 5.96 mm | 104.4 mm | Black nitrided stainless steel | |
| PEEVN-28606-8 | SUPERTECH | +1 mm | 25.5 mm | 5.96 mm | 104.4 mm | Black nitrided stainless steel | |
| 9249006M*8 | CATCAMS | 26.1 mm | 6 mm | 104.2 mm |
Both SUPERTECH valves are 104.4 mm long with a 5.96 mm stem; the CATCAMS valve is 104.2 mm long with a 6 mm stem.
| Part | Peugeot original | Reinforced |
|---|---|---|
| Collets | 0950.20, 0950.29 | |
| Valve stem seals | 0956.40 | |
| Valve guide | 0942.93, 0942.50 |
Check the collets before reassembly: they must sit exactly in the groove of the chosen stem.
Fit new valve stem seals and measure the clearance of each guide, as the CATCAMS has a 6 mm stem and the SUPERTECH valves 5.96 mm.
The exhaust seats are reground with the new valves; with the 25.5 mm PEEVN-28606-8 they are first machined to its size.
| Launched over thirty years back in Silicon Valley, SUPERTECH makes valves, guides, springs and titanium retainers for motorsport. Inconel, titanium or stainless steel: the material follows the target engine, and the brand signs off its valves with well known tuners in rally, track racing and drag racing. | |
| CATCAMS, a Belgian workshop devoted to valve trains, works out its own cam laws and grinds its shafts on numerically controlled machines. Tappets, shims, retainers and springs complete its range, and its camshafts have raced in the BTCC championship and at the Le Mans 24 Hours. |
All three sets fit the TU5JP4, and two criteria tell them apart. The head diameter shows whether the cylinder head seats stay as they are or go to the machinist; the brand then sets the stem, the length and the surface.
| Criterion | Option 1 | Option 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Size | PEEVN-28604-8 24.5 mm head, the same as the original valve: the logical answer as long as the exhaust seats remain at their factory size. A light recut is enough on reassembly, keeping the diameter and avoiding heavier machining. | PEEVN-28606-8 25.5 mm head, 1 mm larger: each extra millimetre brings around 10 to 12 cfm of flow, spent gases leave earlier and more fresh mixture gets in. The machinist opens the seats to this diameter, a job that also gives new life to seats already recut. |
| Brand | SUPERTECH Black nitrided stainless steel, 5.96 mm stem and 104.4 mm length for both sizes. The hardened surface spares the guide: a sound option for a modified TU5JP4 driven every day that enjoys the odd track day or timed hill climb. | CATCAMS 9249006M*8 26.1 mm head, the widest of the three, with a 6 mm stem and a 104.2 mm length. Seats are cut out to this diameter and guide clearance checked, since its stem is 0.04 mm thicker than on the SUPERTECH valves. |

TU5JP4 cylinder head stripped down? Now is a good time to swap the inlet valves and their stem seals as well, so the whole head goes back fresh. See this page:
