  • The BMW S62B50 engine

The BMW S62B50 is the 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 (4,941 cc, 94 mm bore, 89 mm stroke) fitted to the M5 E39 and the Z8 roadster. With four camshafts, 32 valves, eight individual throttle bodies and double VANOS, it delivers 400 hp at 6,600 rpm and 500 Nm, making the M5 E39 a benchmark sports saloon of its day.

Built from 1998 to 2003, this premium V8 remains highly sought after. But its factory rods are sized for stock output: a build, forced induction or regular track use shift the limit to the rotating assembly. These forged connecting rods reinforce the bottom end of an engine that has become rare and costly.

    Forged connecting rods

Machined from forged 4340 steel, these rods take over from the factory parts as soon as the V8 leaves its stock range. Forging aligns the metal grain with the loads, giving far greater fatigue resistance than a sintered rod.

Each rod is shot-peened, inspected and weight-matched to ±1 g across all eight in the set, ensuring flawless balance for a V8 that loves to rev. Supplied with ARP hardware, they cope with power increases, added forced induction or long track sessions.

    Technical guide

4340 forged steel: what is it?

4340 steel, alloyed with nickel, chromium and molybdenum, combines high mechanical strength with good ductility. Compared with the original sintered metal, it offers about +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and +19 to +37% fatigue resistance. In practice, a rod that is more stable under load, more tolerant of pressure peaks and far more durable in competition.

    Connecting rod profiles

H-Beam profile. Its H-shaped, relieved-flank section maximises rigidity and bending resistance for a controlled weight. It is the best-suited profile for a torquey V8 like the S62B50 and the most demanding uses.

How to choose your rod bolts?Logo ARP

The rod bolt bears most of the assembly's stress: it keeps the cap closed on every cycle. ARP offers two grades for this kit, depending on target power and rpm.

Vis de bielle forgée ARP2000ARP 2000: the high-performance standard, with no storage constraints. Handles up to 200 hp per cylinder in 3/8" and 8,500 rpm. Ideal for circuit, trackday, drift, rally, drag and hillclimb — strength, reliability and versatility.
Vis de bielle forgée ARP L19ARP L19: designed for engines pushed to the extreme — high boost pressure, sustained high rpm, elevated cylinder pressure. Up to 250 hp per cylinder in 3/8" and 10,000 rpm. Sensitive to corrosion and hydrogen: store and fit it oiled.

    Measuring bolt stretch

In addition to torque tightening, measuring bolt stretch with a dial indicator remains the most reliable way to guarantee preload. The instructions supplied with the kit always take precedence.

    The brands offered

ZRP, a Greek specialist in high-performance forged connecting rods, machines its parts from 4340 steel and weight-matches them. For the S62B50, the range comes in H-Beam profile with ARP 2000 or ARP L19 hardware, depending on target power and rpm.

Vehicle compatibility for the BMW S62B50 engine

These forged connecting rods are compatible with the factory BMW S62B50 engine and its builds. Vehicles concerned:

Why it’s the most cost-effective solution?

When the S62B50 V8 breaks its bottom end — a spun rod, a breakage at high rpm — the bill explodes: rare parts, specialist labour, long downtime.

For a budget comparable to uncertain second-hand rods, you fit a brand-new forged set here, calibrated and made reliable once and for all. No more doubt with each power increase.

For the same budget: more reliability, a comfortable power margin and the peace of mind of a rotating assembly built to last. It is the most rational way to preserve an exceptional V8.
