Toyota and Lexus engines concerned

This set fits the 7 mm stem valves of the Toyota 1FZ-FE inline six, 4.5 litre and 24 valves, from 205 to 235 hp: Land Cruiser 70 (FZJ70, FZJ75, FZJ78, FZJ79), Land Cruiser 80 (FZJ80) and Land Cruiser 100 (FZJ100, FZJ105), plus the Lexus LX 450, from 1992 to 2009.

The 1FZ-FE has 12 inlet and 12 exhaust valves. SUPERTECH uses the same seal on both sides, so a complete head needs 2 sets of 12. The seal caps the guide and only lets through the oil the stem needs.

Built to tow at low revs for hours, the 1FZ-FE trusts each of its 24 seals to leave the 7 mm stem the right oil film and return the rest. After years of heat in a Land Cruiser 80 or 100, the hardened lip leaks: the level falls from one service to the next, the pipe puffs blue when cold or after a long idle, and carbon creeps over the 24 valves and 6 plugs.

SUPERTECH makes the VS-T7E in a Viton (FKM) that hugs an 11.6 mm OD guide and the 7 mm stem, for a 14 mm seal overall. The 12 pieces of one set fill one full side of the 1FZ-FE, inlet or exhaust; a whole head therefore calls for 2 sets, the same part serving all 24 valves.

The brand offered

For more than 30 years, SUPERTECH, out of San Jose (California), has designed racing stem seals, plus guides, springs and valves too. Ultrasound, radiography and laser check each batch; the part is then refined with noted builders, on the dyno and on track.

Inlet or exhaust?

For the 1FZ-FE, SUPERTECH keeps one part on both sides: the VS-T7E seal in Viton (FKM) caps the 12 inlet valves as well as the 12 exhaust ones, with a 7 mm stem and an 11.6 mm guide throughout. The maker quotes 204 °C (400 °F) continuous for this Viton, a margin that also covers the exhaust, the most exposed side of the 1FZ-FE. Plan for 2 sets of 12.

When valve stem seals must be replaced

• 1FZ-FE oil level falling, blue exhaust as the engine starts
• 24V head off, all 24 valves out
• All 24 guides replaced
• Firmer valves or springs going in
