The 1FZ-FE is Toyota's 4.5 litre straight six with 24 valves, twin overhead camshafts and shim adjustment. It powers the Land Cruiser 80, 100 and fuel-injected 70, from 1992 to the late 2000s, off-road as well as for towing.

Its cylinder head takes 12 original inlet valves 13711-66030, with a 6.970 to 6.985 mm stem and a 98.4 mm length. A supercharger, more aggressive camshafts or repeated heavy loads expose them to more heat and impact.

FERREA and SUPERTECH reinforced inlet valves

The inlet valve meters the incoming air, drops back onto its seat at every cycle and slides in its guide, between 400 and 550 °C. In that range, the chrome-silicon steel of common valves goes from 500 MPa at 500 °C to 250 MPa at 600 °C, 50 % less strength.

FERREA Competition Plus valves are made of a special alloy and bring 20 % more hot and fatigue strength, with 25 % longer seat life. The flat face SUPERTECH TIVN-1083F-12 is black nitrided, which hardens the stem surface and limits wear in the guide.

The F2188P*12, TIVN-1083F-12 and F2169P*12 enlarge the head by 1, 1.5 or 3 mm without changing the stem: the flow area grows, the cylinder fills better and the engine gains power, provided the 12 inlet seats are machined to the chosen diameter.

FERREA pairs this engine with its K10096 collets and its standard size VG1076 inlet guide.

The 39, 39.5 and 41 mm heads require the inlet seats to be machined to their size; the 38 mm F2171P fits on seats reconditioned to the factory size.

Valve clearance is set with shims: after replacing the valves, check it and adjust the shims.
