  • The Subaru engines covered

The 3.3 litre petrol flat-six engine, code EG33, powers the Subaru SVX, listed below.

The original head gasket part number on record for this engine is 11044-AA243. The manufacturer publishes neither its bore, nor its thickness, nor its construction. It is designed for the standard combustion pressure: as soon as it rises, the clamping load fades, the cylinder head lifts and coolant seeps into a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

The gasket does not guarantee the seal on its own: the fasteners that press the cylinder head onto the block provide half of it. A composite gasket is permanently compressed from 100 N/mm² of stress, whereas the 301 stainless steel of MLS gaskets withstands 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and recovers its shape after every combustion.

This page groups the part numbers from the American maker Cometic, a specialist in competition gaskets, in a single construction: MLS. Three bores are offered, 98, 100 and 102.1 mm, each in 18 thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, so the compression ratio can be set without touching the pistons or the cylinder heads. Each part number is sold individually; a flat-six requires two, one for each cylinder head.

A gasket's volume is the free space it leaves above each cylinder. It adds to the combustion chamber and brings the compression ratio down; gaskets are only compared with others of the same bore.

    Technical guide

    The construction offered

Cometic MLS cylinder head gasketCometic MLS
Embossed stainless steel sheets, stacked and riveted together. The outer sheets carry active beads around each cylinder and each coolant passage. A moderate clamping load is enough to seal, and the bore distorts little. It is the versatile choice, from the tuned naturally aspirated engine to moderate forced induction.

    Choosing bore and thickness

Gasket bore. The Cometic MLS comes in 98 mm, 100 mm and 102.1 mm, with no other bore.

Thickness. Subaru gives no thickness figure for the original gasket. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratioOriginal thickness not published by the manufacturer: measure the removed gasket and select, for your bore, the nearest value offered, from 0.69 to 3.56 mm
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost heightThe thickness of the removed gasket, plus the metal taken off during resurfacing
Forced induction build, lower the ratioA greater thickness than that of the removed gasket
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratioA lesser thickness than that of the removed gasket

Since the original thickness is not published, measure with a dial gauge by how much the pistons stand proud of the block face before choosing a thinner gasket than the removed one: this gives the clearance left between piston and cylinder head.

    The brand

CometicFounded in 1989 in Concord, Ohio, the American company Cometic Gasket, Inc. designs gaskets and sealing parts for engines. Its reputation rests on the custom gasket, produced to the required bore and thickness from American raw materials.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 98 mm, 100 mm or 102.1 mm bore of the gaskets offered covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

Important: the part numbers on this page suit the EG33 engine: check your vehicle's engine code, then choose the gasket bore according to that of your cylinders before ordering.

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

Once the original gasket is no longer sufficient, the reinforced gasket steps in: under a higher combustion pressure it does not compress and holds its shape.

Fitting a turbo or a supercharger, or raising the compression ratio, turns the head gasket into the weakest point of the top end. A reinforced gasket removes the risk of a leak, and the cylinder head removal that follows costs much more than the gasket itself.
