The BDF is the 2.8 litre, 24 valve VR6 fitted by Volkswagen to the Golf IV and Bora from 2002 to 2005. Its six cylinders share a single cylinder head, with four valves per cylinder operated by hydraulic finger followers.

Its 12 exhaust valves come in two lengths: six 022 109 611 C at 136.4 mm and six 022 109 611 B at 102.5 mm, all with a 27.0 mm head and a 6 mm stem. One set of long and one set of short valves, of the same size, are therefore needed per engine.

    FERREA reinforced exhaust valves

Sitting in the flow of burnt gases, the head of an exhaust valve reaches 760 to 870 °C on a naturally aspirated engine such as the BDF, and more than 1,000 °C with a supercharger or turbo. The seat removes about 75 % of this heat, the guide about 20 %. As Volkswagen does not publish its valve grade, EV8 family steel gives an order of magnitude: 550 MPa at 600 °C, only 300 MPa at 800 °C. An overheating valve fatigues, distorts and no longer closes properly.

The FERREA valves for this engine belong to the Competition Plus range, in special alloy, with 3 grooves and a 25° seat. According to studies carried out by FERREA, this range offers 20 % more hot strength and a 25 % longer seat life.

The F1990P and F1991P take the head to 28 mm, the F2137P and F2138P to 29 mm: a larger head lets the gases out faster and improves scavenging, at the cost of machining the exhaust seats to the new size.

With their 3 grooves, the FERREA valves are fitted with 3 groove collets.

At 27 mm, the seats keep their diameter; at 28 or 29 mm, they are machined to the chosen size, the same for long and short valves.

The original valve stem seals carry part number 036 109 675 A.

    Our brand

FERREAFERREA, founded in 1978 by Horacio Ferrea and Daniel Urrutia, makes its valves in Florida and Argentina. For the BDF VR6, it offers its Competition Plus range in three head sizes, each in a long and a short version.

    How to choose

Choose the head size, then take one set of long and one set of short valves in that same size:

Seats kept. F1988P (long), F1989P (short).

    Short valves: F1989P, F1991P, F2138P.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • Supercharger or turbo conversion
    • Changed camshafts or valve springs
    • Repeated track sessions
    • Rebuilt cylinder head with marked exhaust valves
    • Preparing a VR6 Golf or Bora for racing

Important: each set contains 6 valves of a single length; a BDF engine needs 6 long and 6 short valves of the same size. The other VR6 engines (2.8 and 2.9 12V, 3.2 24V) use other valves.

    Don't forget the inlet valves

For a fully rebuilt VR6 cylinder head, also replace the inlet valves and the valve stem seals.
