  • The Honda engines covered

The petrol engines H22A1, H22A2, H22A4 and H22A7, all 2.2 litres, power the Honda Prelude IV and V and the Accord VI Type-R and Euro R in the compatibility table below.

The original gasket carries part number 12251-P13-004. Honda publishes neither its bore, nor its thickness, nor its construction. It is calibrated for standard combustion pressure: when that rises, clamping eases, the head lifts and coolant reaches a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

Sealing is not down to the gasket alone: the bolts that press the head onto the block contribute just as much. Beyond 100 N/mm², a composite gasket settles for good; the 301 stainless steel of MLS and MLX gaskets withstands 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and regains its shape at every combustion.

This page brings together 109 Cometic part numbers, from the American maker of competition gaskets, in two constructions: the MLS, multi-layer steel, in six families of 18 part numbers, from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, and the MLX, with chamber stopper, with part number C14015-032 in 89 mm bore and 0.81 mm. Each part number is sold individually: one gasket per engine.

A gasket's volume is the void it leaves above each cylinder; it adds to the combustion chamber and reduces the compression ratio. Compare only gaskets of the same bore: 87, 88 or 89 mm here.

Before reassembly, run a straightedge across the head and block faces, and have whichever needs it machined. Cometic gaskets are already coated: add no sealant. Clean the faces carefully before fitting.

    Technical guide

    The two constructions offered

Cometic MLS cylinder head gasketCometic MLS
Several stainless steel plates, stamped and held together by rivets. The outer plates carry active ribs that trace the outline of the cylinders and fluid passages. Moderate tightening is enough to seal, and the bore distorts little. It is a versatile construction, from the tuned naturally aspirated engine to moderate boost.
Cometic MLX cylinder head gasketCometic MLX
The same base as the MLS, with a folded centre sheet that forms a stopper around each combustion chamber. This stopper concentrates the clamping around the bore and limits crushing of the gasket. It is designed for boosted engines and high combustion pressures.

    Choosing bore and thickness

Gasket bore. The Cometic MLS is offered in 87 mm (C4252, C4255), in 88 mm (C4253, C4198) and in 89 mm (C4254, C4185); the Cometic MLX (C14015-032) is offered in 89 mm.

Thickness. No thickness is published for the original gasket 12251-P13-004. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratioOriginal thickness not published: measure the removed gasket and pick the offered value closest to your measurement on your Honda
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost heightThe offered value closest to the measured thickness of the removed gasket, plus the material removed during resurfacing, on your Honda
Forced induction build, lower the ratioA thickness greater than that of the removed gasket
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratioA thickness below that of the removed gasket, down to 0.69 mm, the minimum value offered on your Honda

Before choosing a thickness below the original, measure with a dial gauge how far the pistons stand above the block deck: this figure gives the clearance left between piston and head. Take it on each of the four pistons.

    The brand

CometicCometic Gasket, Inc. is an American company based in Concord, Ohio, and founded in 1989. It designs and produces gaskets and sealing parts for engines, and made its name with made-to-measure gaskets, cut to the bore and thickness wanted. All manufacturing stays in the United States, from American raw materials.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 87, 88 and 89 mm bores of these gaskets covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

Important: the part numbers on this page suit only the H22A1, H22A2, H22A4 and H22A7 engines: the C4252, C4253 and C4254 go with the H22A4 and H22A7, the C4255, C4198 and C4185 with the H22A1 and H22A2. Check your Honda's engine code before ordering.

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

When the original gasket is no longer enough, the reinforced gasket takes its place: under greater combustion pressure it holds its shape instead of crushing. For this Honda, it is the answer as soon as power exceeds the standard figure.

Adding a turbo, raising the compression ratio, pushing the revs with livelier camshafts: in every case the head gasket becomes the weak point of the top end. A reinforced gasket prevents the leak and the head removal that follows, with the vehicle off the road.
