ARP cylinder head studs for Toyota 2T-C and 3T-C (inline four-cylinder).
The 3T-C is Toyota's 1.8-litre 8-valve inline four-cylinder (85 mm original bore), fitted notably to the Corolla E70 TE72. ARP matches its 203-4206 stud kit, in 8740, to both the 1.6-litre 2T-C and the 1.8-litre 3T-C, with nuts.
The job of the head fasteners is to keep the cylinder head locked to the block despite the pressure inside the combustion chambers. They keep the gasket compressed; as soon as their clamping force drops, leaks appear between head and block.
The ARP 203-4206 kit is supplied as studs with nuts, with an M12 x 1.25 thread, in 8740.
According to the instruction sheet, the studs are screwed into the block by hand first; the cylinder head is fitted afterwards, then washers and nuts are tightened to torque in the manufacturer's order.
ARP makes these fasteners in 8740, a chrome-molybdenum steel whose tensile strength reaches 190,000 psi. To put this figure in context, original engine fasteners generally belong to classes 10.9 and 12.9, whose minimum ranges from 150,800 to 176,900 psi.
In M12 x 1.25, the 8740 studs hold up to 700 hp on this four-cylinder engine (calculated estimate).
| Brand | Grade / material | Nuts | Thread |
| ARP | 8740 | ARP nuts | M12 x 1.25 |
| Part number | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 |
| ARP-203-4206 | 45 Nm | 90 Nm | 136 Nm |
The studs are fitted into the block by hand, without a torque wrench. For a permanent installation, the instruction sheet accepts thread locker, with tightening to be completed before it sets.
If the studs open into a water jacket, the instruction sheet calls for an ARP sealant on their threads.
Final tightening is done in three successive stages, following the manufacturer's tightening sequence; these torque figures only hold with ARP assembly lubricant on the threads and under the nuts.
The instruction sheet also calls for ARP lubricant on the washers.
Values taken from ARP instruction sheet 203-4206, in the revision current on the date of publication. In the event of any discrepancy, the official instruction sheet prevails; it also details the full procedure and the tightening sequence. Read the ARP 203-4206 instruction sheet
To obtain the intended preload, ARP assembly grease must be present on the threads and under the nuts: the torque figures in the table are established with it.

| Founded in the early 1970s by Gary Holzapfel, who came from the aerospace industry, ARP (Automotive Racing Products) set itself the mission of eliminating engine failures caused by inadequate fasteners in competition. Its thousands of parts are designed and produced in California, in several material grades depending on the application. |

Standard fasteners remain suitable as long as the engine keeps its original combustion pressure. They reach their limits in the following cases:
| Model | Engine code | Power | Years |
| Toyota Corolla E70 (TE72) | 3T-C | 75 hp | 1980-1982 |
| Toyota T-18 Liftback (TE72, Australia) | 3T-C | 75 hp | 1979-1981 |
The original head fasteners are sized for stock power: as soon as combustion pressure rises, the gasket and the fasteners are the first to suffer. Reinforced in 8740, ARP fasteners withstand a clearly higher pressure; the risk of a failed gasket or a broken bolt drops, and with it the risk of a repair costing far more than the kit.
