    This kit covers the inlet side of Mazda's 1.8 litre 16-valve four-cylinders: the BP, naturally aspirated or turbocharged, of the MX-5 NA and NB, the 323 BA and BW and the Westfield, then the L8 of the MZR family that powers the MX-5 NC, the Mazda 5 and 6 and the Chinese Ford Focus.

    The cylinder head carries 8 inlet valves. SUPERTECH guides them with part number GDE-MA18-I: 6 mm stem, 11.057 mm outside diameter and 45.25 mm length; the kit contains the 8 guides of the inlet side.

    SUPERTECH manganese bronze inlet valve guides

    On the inlet side, the guide lines the valve up with its seat, hands a share of the stem's heat over to the head and acts as a support for the stem seal. When worn, it develops play: the valve no longer seats cleanly, oil is drawn down the stem and blue smoke, heavy oil use and lower compression appear. Published figures put about a fifth of this heat through the guide.

    SUPERTECH makes these inlet guides from manganese bronze; the brand says this alloy carries heat away much more readily than standard sintered guides. They are usually fitted at the same time as reinforced valves. The 8 guides in the kit cover the whole inlet side.

    Manganese bronze
