    These seals fit the 5 mm stem exhaust valves of the Toyota 4A-GE 20-valve, Silver Top then Black Top, from 139 to 165 hp: Corolla AE92 and AE101, Corolla Levin and Sprinter AE101 and AE111, Corolla Wagon AE101G and Carina VII AT210, from 1987 to 2001.

    This 4A-GE carries two exhaust valves per cylinder, so 8 seals on this side, against three inlet valves per cylinder. The seal surrounds the guide and meters the oil that lubricates the 5 mm stem.

    SUPERTECH exhaust valve stem seals

    On the 4A-GE 20V exhaust, the 8 seals work against the valves that the engine heats most as it climbs the revs. Aged or nicked, they let oil run along the 5 mm stems and into the chambers to be burnt off: the oil level drops, the Corolla or Levin exhaust smokes blue, carbon reaches valves and ports. A trickle of oil must still reach stem and guide.

    For this position SUPERTECH uses a Viton (FKM) intended to last against the 8 exhaust valves of the 20V; the maker credits this material with holding high temperatures, at 204 °C (400 °F) continuous. Each seal sits on a 9.7 mm OD guide, around the 5 mm stem. The 8 pieces fit the whole exhaust of a 4A-GE 20V, whether Silver Top or Black Top; for the inlet, the same VS-TY5E part comes as a set of 12.

    Inlet or exhaust?

    On the 4A-GE 20V, SUPERTECH uses one seal on both sides: the VS-TY5E made of Viton (FKM), dimensioned for a 5 mm stem and a 9.7 mm guide. The 8 exhaust valves take 8, the 12 inlet valves 12, all with the same 204 °C (400 °F) continuous rating according to the maker.
