The 1.4 TSI from the EA211 family is an inline four-cylinder petrol engine with direct injection and turbocharging, displacing 1,395 cc (74.5 mm bore, 80 mm stroke). Launched in 2012 to replace the EA111 family, this modern aluminium-head unit powers a very wide range of Volkswagen Group models – Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Škoda – in outputs from 125 to 150 hp, with several versions featuring cylinder deactivation (ACT). Compact and efficient, it combines forced induction and direct injection for excellent everyday efficiency.
As soon as boost pressure, load or engine speed is pushed beyond factory values, the stock rods of this small turbocharged unit – sized above all for economical use – become the weak link in the reciprocating assembly. Replacing them with forged rods is the decisive step to make an uprated EA211 1.4 TSI reliable for good, able to absorb the torque and rpm increases of a build without faltering.
Our forged EA211 1.4 TSI rods are machined from wrought 4340 steel, the reference alloy in motorsport. They suit every discipline, from circuit to drift by way of rally, drag, time attack and hillclimb, and support both a strong fast-road 1.4 TSI build and an engine pushed for competition. Depending on the target (Stage 2 tuning, Stage 3 high power, Stage 4 and beyond), they lock in the power increase without ever cutting corners on reliability. Supplied as a weight-matched set of 4 to within ±1 g, they keep the factory 19 mm piston pin and 140.02 mm center-to-center length.
Compared with a factory rod designed above all for high-volume manufacturing cost, a forged 4340 rod offers a clearly greater mechanical reserve: around +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and +19 to +37% fatigue endurance. That margin lets a boosted EA211 1.4 TSI absorb cylinder-pressure peaks and inertia loads without breakage. The entire range offered here is made from this same forged 4340 steel.

The torque and stretch relate to the ARP 2000 bolts supplied with the kit; refer to the technical sheet provided. Checking with a stretch gauge remains the most reliable and repeatable method to guarantee preload.

| 4340 is a low-alloy steel with nickel, chromium and molybdenum. Forging aligns the metal fibres in the direction of load, closes internal porosity and delivers far greater mechanical strength than a factory cast or sintered rod. The result is a tensile strength of around 930 to 1,080 MPa together with high fatigue endurance, essential as soon as the engine gains torque, power or revs. This is the material used across our entire EA211 range. |
![]() | The I profile (ZRP), light (397 g), concentrates material where the compression loads build up. Machined from forged 4340 steel, it favours a light reciprocating assembly to help the 1.4 TSI pick up revs while keeping high reliability; it ships with ARP 2000 bolts in 5/16". |
| ARP 2000: the all-round benchmark alloy, with a tensile strength of about 220,000 psi (1,517 MPa). Offered here in the 5/16" diameter suited to the EA211 center-to-center, it covers the vast majority of builds, from raised boost to high power. It is the default choice to make the bottom end reliable for good. |
| The most reliable way to guarantee bolt preload is not to aim for a torque figure but to measure bolt stretch with a dial gauge. Tighten progressively until the recommended stretch is reached, here 0.140 to 0.152 mm: this ensures an even, repeatable clamp load, cylinder after cylinder. |

![]() | This EA211 range is made by ZRP, a manufacturer of high-performance race forged rods. It is offered in the I profile, machined from 4340 steel and supplied with ARP 2000 bolts in 5/16". Each reference ships as a complete weight-matched set of 4, with its dedicated ARP bolts. |

On a tuned EA211 1.4 TSI, a stock rod that lets go usually takes the block, crankshaft and pistons with it. Investing in a forged rod set from the outset costs far less than an engine failure followed by a full rebuild. You permanently strengthen the bottom end, preserve the value of your build and drive with peace of mind, in intensive use as much as day to day.
