    This set is for the Ford Zetec 2.0 16-valve four-cylinder once it has been fitted with 5.5 mm stem valves and guides. The engine powers the Ford Focus I 2.0 16V, the Australian LR Focus and the 2.0 Escort and Focus sold in the United States.

    Its head takes 8 inlet valves, two per cylinder, each topped by a seal that regulates the oil reaching the stem. With 5.5 mm stem valves, that seal must also be made for this diameter.

    FERREA inlet valve stem seals

    The seal caps the end of the guide and should pass only a trace of oil, just what the stem needs to slide without seizing. Too old or baked by heat, it becomes porous: the oil level drops faster, blue smoke shows at start-up or after a spell of idling, and deposits blacken valves and plugs.

    For this build, FERREA makes the seal in Viton (FKM), a heat-tolerant rubber, and gives it a spring that holds the lip against the 5.5 mm stem to meter oil better when the engine works hard. The set of 8 covers the whole inlet of the converted Zetec; the exhaust has a different FERREA seal, sold separately.

    The brand offered

    FERREAFERREA is a valvetrain specialist that machines its own valves, springs and guides and moulds its seals at its Florida and Argentina sites. Its parts serve tuned and race engines; the spring in the Viton seals keeps them sealing under load.

    Inlet or exhaust?

    For the converted Zetec 2.0, FERREA offers VS1001 for the inlet and VS1000 for the exhaust, the latter in a high-temperature compound. Both are Viton (FKM), carry a lip spring and suit a 5.5 mm stem, yet they do not interchange from one side of the cylinder head to the other. This engine needs 8 seals on the inlet and 8 on the exhaust.
