This kit fits the inlet side of the Nissan SR20, the 2.0 litre, 16-valve, twin-cam four-cylinder: the naturally aspirated SR20DE of the Primera, Sunny, Almera, Silvia or 200SX, and the turbocharged SR20DET of the 200SX, Silvia, 180SX and Sunny GTI-R.

The cylinder head holds 8 inlet valves, each in a pressed-in guide (Nissan part number 13212-53J60, shared by the SR20DE and SR20DET). Nissan specifies a finished bore of 6.000 to 6.018 mm and a standard outside diameter of 10.023 to 10.034 mm, with a repair size of 10.223 to 10.234 mm.

Pressed into the cylinder head, the inlet guide keeps the valve facing its seat, lets a fraction of the heat stored in the stem pass into the aluminium and bears the stem seal. With wear, the valve starts to rock: it seats poorly, oil gets past the stem, and blue smoke on start-up, oil consumption and loss of compression follow.

These guides come out of SUPERTECH's precision machining in manganese bronze; according to the brand, this copper alloy lets heat escape much more easily than series sintered guides. The kit brings together the 8 inlet guides needed for a cylinder head; they are usually installed alongside reinforced valves.

Standard or oversize?

SUPERTECH offers this guide in two sizes: standard, with a 10.03 mm outside diameter, and 0.001" (0.0254 mm) oversize on that diameter.

Manganese bronze

Here copper and zinc are alloyed with a little manganese, aluminium and iron. The result is a material of high mechanical strength that wears slowly under friction and shrugs off corrosion, hence its use for bushes and guiding parts working under heavy loads.
