The B18A and B18B are Honda 1,834 cc four-cylinder engines (81 mm bore, 89 mm stroke) with twin camshafts and 16 valves, without VTEC. From 1989 to 2001 they powered the Integra, the Civic 180i, the Domani and the Orthia.

Their cylinder head carries 8 exhaust valves, two per cylinder. SUPERTECH reproduces them with a 28.0 mm head, a 6.55 mm stem and a 105.8 mm overall length.

    SUPERTECH reinforced exhaust valves

On the exhaust side, the head sits in the burnt gases: its metal reaches 760 to 870 °C on a naturally aspirated engine and goes past 1,000 °C with a turbo. About 75 % of that heat leaves through the seat and 20 % through the guide. For the original part, EV8 family steel is the benchmark: 550 MPa at 600 °C, only 300 MPa at 800 °C. Beyond that, the head distorts, fatigues and ends up losing its seal.

Both SUPERTECH valves are black nitrided stainless steel: nitriding hardens the surface and limits stem wear in the guide.

The HEVN-1004-8 enlarges the head by 0.5 mm, to 28.5 mm: the burnt gases flow out more easily and the next intake stroke benefits, provided the exhaust seats are machined to that diameter.

Check that the valve lock groove matches the collets you reuse before refitting the springs.

At 28.0 mm the seats keep their diameter; with the HEVN-1004-8, the 8 exhaust seats are machined to 28.5 mm.

Both part numbers share the same 6.55 mm stem and 105.8 mm overall length: the original guides are fine if they are within tolerance.

    Our brand

SUPERTECHSUPERTECH Performance, a Californian workshop that has been making racing valvetrain parts for more than thirty years, offers a black nitrided stainless steel exhaust valve for the B18A and B18B, in standard size and +0.5 mm.

    How to choose

The two versions differ only in head diameter:

    CriterionOption 1Option 2
    SizeStandard, 28.0 mm
    Original seats kept. HEVN-1004-0-8.
    +0.5 mm, 28.5 mm
Better gas flow, seats machined. HEVN-1004-8.
    MaterialBlack nitrided stainless steel
    Same material on both versions.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • More aggressive camshafts or stiffer springs
    • Frequent high rpm
    • Turbo or supercharger conversion
    • Track days
    • Cylinder head rebuild with marked exhaust valves

Important: a set of 8 covers a complete engine. These valves are for the non-VTEC B18A and B18B: the VTEC B18C engines and the CR-V B20 are not covered on this page.

    Don't forget the inlet valves

With a B18A or B18B cylinder head off, it is the right time to replace the inlet valves and the valve stem seals as well.
