  • The Lamborghini engines covered

The Lamborghini 3.5 litre V12, identified by the code "350 GT", powers the Lamborghini 350 GT, built from 1964 to 1967 and detailed below.

The original gaskets carry the part numbers 001100259 for the left bank and 001100260 for the right bank. The manufacturer publishes neither their bore, nor their construction, nor their thickness. They are sized for standard combustion pressure: when it rises, the head loosens, lifts and lets coolant pass into a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

The gasket does not seal on its own: the fasteners that clamp the head to the block count just as much. The CFM-20 pairs a galvanized steel core with a soft asbestos-free compound that fills small irregularities in the sealing faces.

This page offers one part number from the American maker Cometic, a specialist in racing gaskets, in a single construction: CFM-20. Its bore is 83 mm and its thickness 1.50 mm. It fits the left bank and is sold individually; the right-bank part number is not offered here.

A gasket's volume is the hollow it leaves above each cylinder. It adds to the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; only gaskets of the same bore can be compared.

Before fitting, check the flatness of the head and the block with a straightedge, and have either one resurfaced if needed. Cometic checks the flatness of each of its CFM-20 gaskets.

    Technical guide

    The construction offered

    CFM-20 Cometic
A galvanized steel core, covered on each face with a soft asbestos-free compound of aramid fibres, mineral fillers and elastomer binders. This layered construction, between metal and fibre, pairs the strength of steel with the softness of the compound. It is offered here as a single gasket, with an 83 mm bore and a thickness of 1.50 mm.

    Choosing bore and thickness

Gasket bore. The Cometic CFM-20 is offered in 83 mm (C14105-059), with no other bore.

Thickness. No thickness is published by the manufacturer for this engine's original gaskets. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratioOriginal thickness not published: measure the removed gasket and compare it with the only gasket offered, 1.50 mm
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost heightOnly one thickness exists, 1.50 mm: set it against that of the removed gasket, plus whatever resurfacing took off
Forced induction build, lower the ratio1.50 mm, if the thickness read on the original gasket at removal is lower
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratio1.50 mm, if the thickness read on the original gasket at removal is higher

With no published original thickness, use a dial gauge to read how far the pistons stand proud of the block's gasket face, above all if the removed gasket is thinner than 1.50 mm: this gives the clearance left between piston and head.

    The brand

CometicCometic Gasket, Inc. is an American company making gaskets and sealing solutions for engines, founded in 1989 in Concord, Ohio. Its reputation rests on the made-to-order gasket, cut to the bore and thickness wanted; all of its manufacturing stays in the United States, using American raw materials.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 83 mm bore of the gasket offered covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

OEM part number: 001100259 (left bank) and 001100260 (right bank).

Important: the part number on this page suits the left bank of the 3.5 litre V12 of the Lamborghini 350 GT: it does not replace the right-bank gasket, so check the side before ordering.

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

When the original gasket reaches its limit, this CFM-20 steps in: the steel core keeps its shape under combustion pressure, and the soft compound on both faces follows the small flaws of the head and block.

When an engine works close to its limit, the head gasket is often the first part to give way. A reinforced gasket stops the leak, whereas the head removal that follows, with the car off the road for days, costs far more than the gasket.
