Reinforced Cometic head gasket, in multi-layer MLS. Sold individually, two gaskets per V8 engine.
The petrol V8 engines of 3.9 and 4.0 litres, codes 35D, 36D, 37D and 38D, power the first-generation Range Rover and the Land Rover Discovery I and II, listed below.
Three original head gasket part numbers are on record for these engines: ERR 7217, LVB 50030 and LVB500030. The manufacturer publishes neither their bore, nor their thickness, nor their construction. They are designed for the standard combustion pressure: as soon as it rises, the clamping load fades, the cylinder head lifts and coolant seeps into a cylinder.
The gasket does not seal alone: the fasteners that clamp the cylinder head onto the block contribute half of it. A composite gasket settles for good from 100 N/mm² of stress, while the 301 stainless steel of MLS gaskets absorbs 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and springs back after every combustion.
This page groups the part numbers from the American maker Cometic, a specialist in competition gaskets, in a single construction: MLS. Two bores are offered, 94 and 96 mm, each in 18 thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, so the compression ratio can be set without touching the pistons or the cylinder head. Each part number is sold individually; a V8 requires two, one for each cylinder bank.

The volume of a gasket is the space it leaves free above each cylinder. That space is added to the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; only gaskets with the same bore are set side by side.
| Fasteners | Engines | Tightening torque |
| Original cylinder head bolts | 35D, 36D, 37D, 38D | 20 Nm, then 90°, then 90° |
Before fitting, check the flatness of the cylinder head and block with a straight edge, and have them resurfaced if necessary. Cometic supplies its gaskets already coated: do not add any sealing paste.
![]() | Cometic MLS Embossed stainless steel sheets, laid one on another and riveted. The outer sheets carry active beads around each cylinder and each coolant passage. A moderate tightening is enough to seal, with little bore distortion. It is the versatile choice, from the tuned naturally aspirated engine to moderate forced induction. |
Gasket bore. The Cometic MLS comes in 94 mm and 96 mm, with no other bore.
Thickness. Rover publishes no thickness for the original gasket. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.
| Your goal | Thickness to choose |
| Keep the original compression ratio | Original thickness not published by the manufacturer: measure the removed gasket and pick, for your bore, the closest value offered, from 0.69 to 3.56 mm |
| Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost height | The thickness of the removed gasket, increased by the metal taken off when resurfacing |
| Forced induction build, lower the ratio | A greater thickness than that of the removed gasket |
| Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratio | A lesser thickness than that of the removed gasket |
Without a published original thickness, measure with a dial gauge how far the pistons protrude above the block face before opting for a thinner gasket than the removed one: this measurement gives the clearance that remains between piston and cylinder head.
| Cometic Gasket, Inc., an American company founded in 1989 in Concord, Ohio, designs gaskets and sealing parts for engines. It made its name with the custom gasket, made to the bore and thickness wanted from American raw materials. |

Important: the part numbers on this page suit the engines 35D, 36D, 37D and 38D: check your vehicle's engine code, then choose the gasket bore according to that of your cylinders before ordering.
When the original gasket is no longer enough, the reinforced gasket takes over: under a higher combustion pressure it does not settle and keeps its shape.
A turbo, a supercharger or a raised compression ratio make the head gasket the first weak link of the top end. A reinforced gasket rules out the leak, and the cylinder head removal that goes with it costs far more than the gasket itself.
