Toyota engines concerned

This set equips the 5.5 mm stem intake valves of Toyota's 24-valve V6 engines: the 4-litre 1GR-FE of the Land Cruiser, Prado, Hilux, 4Runner, Tacoma, FJ Cruiser and Lexus GX, plus the 3.5-litre 2GR-FE and 2GR-FSE of the Camry, RAV 4, Highlander, Previa, Sienna, Crown, Lexus ES, GS, IS, RC and RX, and the Lotus Evora, Exige, 3-Eleven and Emira.

The V6 has 12 intake valves, two per cylinder, spread over two heads. The original seal dresses the guide and only lets the useful oil down; Toyota lists it as 90913-02101, 90913-02111 or 90913-02112 depending on period, with 90080-31043 and 90080-31101 on the 2GR-FE.

Perched on the guide, the seal works as an oil meter: it blocks the oil streaming over the head and leaves only a veil to grease the stem, without which guide and stem wear quickly. When years or temperature take away its suppleness, the V6 starts burning oil: dropping level, blue smoke on cranking or coming off idle, deposits on valves and plugs.

On the intake side SUPERTECH opts for polyacrylate (ACM), a proven rubber, sized for a 5.5 mm stem and a 10.3 mm outside diameter guide. The 12 pieces fill the entire intake of the V6 across both heads; the hotter exhaust takes a high-temperature compound in a separate set.

On the San Francisco Bay, in San Jose, SUPERTECH has developed stem seals, springs, valves and guides for racing engines for over 30 years. Parts leave an ultrasonic, X-ray and laser inspection before being proven by recognised engine builders.

Inlet or exhaust?

Same template, two materials: VS-T5.5-I polyacrylate (ACM) for the intake, VS-T5.5-E Viton (FKM) for the exhaust, picked for the valves most exposed to heat. SUPERTECH quotes 177 °C (350 °F) for the former and 204 °C (400 °F) continuous for the latter. On these V6 engines, count 12 seals per side, meaning one full set for the intake and one for the exhaust.
