Toyota and Lexus engines concerned

On the exhaust, these 12 seals fit the 6 mm stem valves of Toyota's 24-valve straight sixes: 1JZ-GE, 1JZ-GTE, 2JZ-GE, 2JZ-GTE and 7M-GTE. They equip the Supra A70 and A80, Chaser, Cresta, Mark II, Crown, Soarer, Aristo, Altezza, Verossa, Progrès and Origin, and the Lexus GS 300, IS 300 and SC 300, from 179 to 330 hp, from 1987 onwards.

The head carries 12 exhaust valves, two per cylinder, each with its own seal on the guide letting through only the oil the stem needs. Toyota fits the 90913-02089 on the 1JZ-GTE and early 1JZ-GE, then the 90913-02088 on the 1JZ-GE, 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE, and the 90913-02062 on the 7M-GTE.

FERREA and SUPERTECH exhaust valve stem seals

At the exhaust, the seal rides on the hottest valve of the 1JZ, 2JZ or 7M-GTE. Once cracked, it lets oil run down the 6 mm stem and burn in the port: frequent top-ups, blue smoke, carbon. It must still pass a little oil, though, or stem and guide will wear.

Here the two brands settle on Viton (FKM). FERREA's compound is built for high heat and carries an integral spring pressing the lip against the stem to limit oil use. SUPERTECH quotes a 204 °C (400 °F) continuous rating for its Viton seals.

Why Viton on the exhaust?

On these sixes, the exhaust valve sees far more heat than its inlet partner, so both brands fit Viton (FKM) on it: SUPERTECH rates it at 204 °C (400 °F) continuous, while its polyacrylate stops at 177 °C (350 °F). Allow 12 seals per side.

When valve stem seals must be replaced
