Exhaust valve guides Toyota Lexus 2JZ-GE 2JZ-GTE

Applicable Toyota and Lexus engines

This kit goes on the exhaust side of the 3.0 litre 2JZ straight-six, sold as the naturally aspirated 2JZ-GE at Lexus and Toyota, then as the twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE in the Supra JZA80 and the Aristo JZS161.

The 12 exhaust valves of the head each run in a guide, hence a kit of 12. The original valve, Toyota reference 13715-46020, also has a 6 mm stem, which fixes the bore of the guide.

FERREA and SUPERTECH exhaust valve guides

On the exhaust side the guide sits in combustion gas far hotter than on the inlet side, particularly on a boosted 2JZ-GTE. It holds the valve true to its seat, conducts heat from the stem into the head and backs up the stem seal. When worn it allows the valve to rock: weaker sealing, oil burned in the exhaust, blue haze at idle.

FERREA cuts these guides from an American-made bronze rich in copper; the maker's catalogue describes a heat treatment done in its own shop, which improves heat transfer, wear life, high-temperature strength and lubricity. Computer-controlled machining keeps tolerances tight, and the material suits both titanium and stainless valves. SUPERTECH's guide in manganese bronze measures 40.5 mm in length by 11.03 mm outside diameter and also takes a 6 mm stem. References VG1034*12 and VG1037*12 from FERREA, along with GDE-T2JZ-E-12 from SUPERTECH, are delivered in lots of 12, enough for every exhaust guide in the head.

Standard or oversize?

At FERREA, two sizes exist: standard and oversize by 0.025 mm (0.001"). The SUPERTECH guide states no size; its outside diameter is 11.03 mm.

Remember the inlet guides and valve stem seals

Once the guides are replaced, new valve stem seals complete the refresh of the cylinder head and are fitted during the same teardown.
