This set suits the exhaust side of two families of VAG turbo four-cylinders with a 6 mm stem. All these heads carry 8 exhaust valves, two per cylinder. The original seal caps the guide and meters the stem oil; Volkswagen supplies it as 036 109 675 A, 20 per 1.8T 20V engine and 16 per 2.0 TFSI, some versions taking 057 109 675, the same seal being used on the intake.

SUPERTECH exhaust valve stem seals

Fitted on the exhaust, this seal sits next to the valve that takes the most heat. Once it goes hard or splits, it can no longer stop the oil: it runs along the stem to burn in the chamber, so the level drops, blue smoke appears and carbon builds up on valve heads and in the port. A fine oil film must still get through, or stem and guide would wear.

For the exhaust, SUPERTECH moulds its seals from Viton (FKM), a compound for high heat picked because it lasts against the warmth radiated by these valves: according to the brand, this material lets them face higher temperatures, up to 204 °C (400 °F) continuous. Their seat is an 8.8 mm outside diameter guide, the stem measuring 6 mm. With 8 pieces, the set fits the whole exhaust of the head; polyacrylate (ACM) intake seals come as a separate set.

Why two different materials?

Both seals have identical dimensions; what separates them is heat, as the exhaust side gets far hotter. So SUPERTECH reserves the tougher Viton (FKM) for the exhaust (VS-VBM6-E) and fits polyacrylate (ACM) at the intake (VS-VBM6-I). These heads need 8 per side.
