Toyota and Lexus engines concerned

This set of 12 seals fits the 6 mm stem inlet valves of Toyota's 24-valve straight sixes: 1JZ-GE and 1JZ-GTE (2.5 l), 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE (3.0 l) and 7M-GTE (3.0 l turbo). They are found in the Supra A70 and A80, Chaser, Cresta, Mark II, Crown, Soarer, Aristo, Altezza, Verossa, Progrès and Origin, and in the Lexus GS 300, IS 300 and SC 300, from 179 to 330 hp, from 1987 onwards.

Each head has 12 inlet valves, two per cylinder, each capped by a seal that sits on the guide and meters the oil lubricating the stem. Toyota fits the 90913-02090 on the 1JZ and 2JZ (or 90913-02106 and 90913-02123 from July 1993 to January 1995) and the 90913-02062 on the 7M-GTE.

FERREA and SUPERTECH inlet valve stem seals

On a Supra's 2JZ-GTE as on a Chaser's 1JZ, the inlet seal gives the 6 mm stem only the oil it needs to slide in its guide; run dry, both wear. A lip hardened by years or heat lets oil into the chamber instead: repeated top-ups, blue haze when starting or after lengthy idling, carbon on the valves.

FERREA's seals are made of Viton (FKM), a rubber suited to high temperatures, with a spring clamping the lip round the stem so the seal holds and oil use stays in check under hard driving. For the inlet, SUPERTECH relies on a polyacrylate (ACM).

FERREA or SUPERTECH?

On the 1JZ, 2JZ and 7M-GTE, both sets fit the same 6 mm stem. FERREA fits a lip spring and Viton (FKM) everywhere; SUPERTECH puts polyacrylate (ACM) at the inlet, Viton at the exhaust. SUPERTECH rates the first at 177 °C (350 °F), the latter at 204 °C (400 °F) continuous.

When valve stem seals must be replaced

• Topping up oil, blue haze when starting or after idling
• 1JZ or 2JZ head off for overhaul
• Valve guides renewed
• Uprated valves and springs going onto a 2JZ-GTE
