Reinforced Cometic MLS head gaskets for the Honda Prelude H23A1 engine.
Code H23A1: the Honda engine powers the Prelude from 1992 to 1996 according to the applications published by Cometic, whose part numbers on this page are listed for the H23A1.
The gasket fitted at the factory carries Honda number 12251-P14-A02. Honda has discontinued this part and gives no replacement number, nor the bore, thickness or construction of this gasket. It is sized for the standard combustion pressure: beyond it, the head loses clamping, lifts and coolant gets into a cylinder.
The seal does not rest on the gasket alone: the fasteners that clamp the head to the block weigh as much as it does. Beyond 100 N/mm², a composite gasket settles with no recovery; the 301 stainless steel of MLS gaskets takes 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and regains its shape at every combustion. Follow the tightening torque and sequence given in the Honda manual for your engine.
This page gathers the part numbers of Cometic, an American maker of competition gaskets, in a single construction: the MLS, a multi-layer stainless steel gasket. Three bores are offered, 87.5, 88 and 89 mm, with thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm. Each part number is sold individually: one gasket per engine.

A gasket's volume is the void it leaves above each cylinder. That void adds to the combustion chamber and reduces the compression ratio, all the more when the gasket is thick and the bore large. Compare these values only between gaskets of the same bore. On this page the volume therefore changes with the bore chosen among 87.5, 88 and 89 mm as much as with the thickness.

Before assembly, check the flatness of the head and block faces with a straightedge, and have any that need it machined. Use no sealing paste: Cometic gaskets are supplied coated. Also check the joint face along the whole length of the H23A1 head.
![]() | Cometic MLS Five stainless steel sheets, embossed, stacked and riveted. The outer sheets draw active beads around the cylinders and the fluid passages. A measured tightening torque is enough to seal, without distorting the bore. This gasket suits the tuned naturally aspirated engine as well as moderate forced induction. On this page it is offered in 87.5, 88 and 89 mm. |
Gasket bore. Cometic MLS comes in 87.5 mm (C4553), in 88 mm (C4554) and in 89 mm (C4555).
Thickness. Honda gives no thickness for the original gasket of the H23A1. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.
| Your goal | Thickness to choose |
| Keep the original compression ratio | Original thickness not provided: measure the removed gasket and keep the closest value offered |
| Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost height | The offered value closest to the figure read on the removed gasket, plus the material taken off when resurfacing |
| Forced induction build, lower the ratio | A thickness above the one read on the removed gasket |
| Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratio | A thickness below that of the removed gasket, down to 0.69 mm, the thinnest in the range |
For a thickness below the original, first read with a dial gauge how far the pistons stand proud of the block deck: this measurement gives the clearance remaining between piston and head. This check applies to each of the three bores on this page, 87.5, 88 and 89 mm.
| Cometic Gasket, Inc. is an American company created in 1989 in Concord, Ohio, that designs engine gaskets and sealing solutions. It made its name with the made-to-measure gasket, cut to the bore and thickness requested. All production stays in the United States, with American materials. For the H23A1 it offers three bores here, 87.5, 88 and 89 mm. |

Important: the part numbers on this page correspond to the Honda H23A1 engine, listed by Cometic for the Prelude from 1992 to 1996: read off your car's engine code and measure your cylinder bore before ordering, 87.5, 88 or 89 mm.
When the original gasket reaches its limits, the reinforced gasket replaces it: under higher combustion pressure, it keeps its geometry and does not sag. This page offers it for the Honda H23A1 engine.
With a turbo, a supercharger or a higher compression ratio, the head works harder and the gasket becomes the weak point of the top end. A reinforced gasket prevents the gas or coolant leak and the head removal that follows, with the car off the road. The Prelude's H23A1 is no exception to this rule.
