  • The Nissan engines covered

The Nissan L28 and L28E petrol engines, of 2.8 litres, are fitted to the Nissan 280Z, 280ZX, Cedric, Datsun 280C, Laurel, Leopard, Patrol and Skyline models listed below.

This original gasket carries the part number 11044-N4200. Its bore is 88.5 mm. Nissan publishes neither its construction nor its thickness. Each engine takes a single one. It is designed for standard combustion pressure: when that pressure increases, the clamping load weakens, the cylinder head lifts and coolant seeps into a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

Sealing does not depend on the head gasket alone: it leans on the fasteners, which press the head against the block. Beyond 100 N/mm² of admissible stress, a composite gasket is crushed for good, whereas the 301 stainless steel of MLS gaskets takes 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and recovers its shape after every combustion.

This page brings together the part numbers of Cometic, an American maker of racing gaskets, for a single construction: the multi-layer steel MLS. Every gasket has an 89 mm bore, against 88.5 mm for the original gasket, and thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, enough to adjust the compression ratio without touching the pistons or the cylinder head. As a rule, the gasket bore chosen is at least 0.5 mm larger than the actual cylinder bore. Each part number is sold individually, one gasket per engine.

Gasket volume is the space it leaves open above each cylinder. This space adds to the combustion chamber: the larger it is, the lower the compression ratio. Compare this volume only between gaskets of the same bore.

Before fitting the gasket, check with a straight edge that the head and the block are flat, and have them machined if necessary. Do not apply any sealing paste: Cometic supplies these gaskets already coated.

    Technical guide

    The construction offered

Cometic MLS cylinder head gasketCometic MLS
A pile of stamped stainless steel sheets, held together by rivets. The outer sheets show active beads around each cylinder and each fluid passage. A moderate tightening torque is enough to seal and the bore barely distorts. This versatile solution suits anything from the tuned naturally aspirated engine to moderate boost.

    Choosing bore and thickness

Gasket bore. The Cometic MLS is offered in 89 mm (C4580), in that bore only.

Thickness. Nissan does not publish the thickness of the original gasket. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratioOriginal thickness not published: measure the removed gasket and keep the offered value closest to it
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost heightThe offered value closest to the thickness measured on the original gasket, plus the material taken off
Forced induction build, lower the ratioA thickness greater than the one measured on the original gasket at removal
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratioA thickness smaller than the one measured on the original gasket at removal, down to 0.69 mm, the lowest value offered

If the chosen thickness is below the original one, read with a dial gauge the height by which the pistons stand proud of the block: this figure gives the clearance that remains between piston and head.

    The brand

CometicCometic Gasket, Inc., an American maker of engine gaskets and sealing solutions, was founded in 1989 in Concord, Ohio. It has made a speciality of the custom gasket, cut to the bore and thickness required. All of its manufacturing remains in the United States, with American materials.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 89 mm bore of these gaskets covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

When the original gasket reaches its limit, the reinforced gasket takes over: even under higher combustion pressure, it keeps its shape instead of being crushed.

When power rises, through a supercharger, a turbo or a higher compression ratio, the head gasket is the first part to give way in the top end. Choosing a reinforced gasket therefore means putting reliability first: you avoid the breakdown, and the head removal that follows it.
