  • Chrysler and Dodge engines covered

The 2.4 16V EDV is a 2.4 litre four-cylinder petrol engine with twin camshafts and 16 valves, built naturally aspirated or turbocharged. At Chrysler it powers the Stratus, Cirrus, Sebring and PT Cruiser, GT and convertible included, from 1996 to 2010; at Dodge, the Neon II 2.4 and the Neon SRT-4.

The engine has 8 exhaust valves. At standard size the FERREA valve has a 28.36 mm head, a 5.95 mm stem and a 109.8 mm length, with a single groove. Above all on the turbo versions, the production valve copes poorly with the higher load, revs and exhaust gas temperature that tuning brings.

    FERREA reinforced exhaust valves

The exhaust valve lets the burnt gases out and remains the most exposed part of the cylinder head: its head reaches 760 to 870 °C on a naturally aspirated engine and over 1,000 °C on a turbo engine such as the SRT-4's. About 75 % of that heat flows out through the seat and 20 % through the guide. An EV8 type valve steel withstands 550 MPa at 600 °C but only 300 MPa at 800 °C: past that point, the head heats up, fatigues, distorts and ends up leaking.

FERREA makes this valve in Super Alloy, a nickel-based alloy from its Competition Plus range intended for turbo engines. The range brings 20 % more hot strength and extends seat life by 25 %. The single groove stem takes collets that grip it over their full height.

A version with a 29.36 mm head (+1 mm) completes the offer, with the same stem. The burnt gases leave the cylinder faster and make way for the fresh charge, to the benefit of power. It needs exhaust seats machined to that size.

    Valve guide

Each valve is refitted with collets designed for a single groove stem, such as the K10079, preferably new.

The 29.36 mm head requires exhaust seats machined to its diameter: plan a visit to the machine shop when the cylinder head is rebuilt.

The VS1018 valve stem seals, in heat-resistant Viton, fit the 6 mm stem on the exhaust side and keep the centring of the original spring seat.

    Our brand

FERREAFERREA Racing Components, founded in 1978 by Horacio Ferrea and Daniel Urrutia, produces its valves in its own plants in Florida and Argentina, from stainless steel to titanium and nickel-based superalloys. NASCAR, drag racing and circuit engine builders fit them.

    How to choose

Under the retainer, the collets sit in the stem groove and hold the valve. With a single groove they grip the stem over their full height: what remains to choose is the head size.

    CriterionOption 1Option 2
    SizeStandard size, 28.36 mm head
For a cylinder head whose exhaust seats have never been recut: the head keeps its production size.
+1 mm size, 29.36 mm head
The burnt gases leave faster and make more room for the fresh charge, to the benefit of power (about 10 to 12 cfm per mm of head). Seats to be machined to the new size; also makes up for reground seats.
    GroovesSingle groove
The collets grip the stem, the groove carries less load and the wider contact reduces friction: better strength with stiff springs and at high revs. K10079 collets recommended, preferably new.

    When reinforced valves become necessary

    • More aggressive camshafts or uprated valve springs
    • Rev limit raised
    • Bigger turbo or increased boost pressure
    • Cylinder head rebuild on a track or rally engine
    • Original valves pitted, worn or already reworked

    OEM part number (exhaust valve):

Important: one set of 8 equips a complete engine (two exhaust valves per cylinder). The 2.0 16V of the Neon, Stratus and PT Cruiser is not concerned.

    Don't forget the inlet valves

When rebuilding an EDV cylinder head, replace the inlet valves and valve stem seals as well, for a fully renewed valvetrain.
