Crankshaft thrust washers for the Toyota 1AZ-FE, 2AZ-FE and 2AZ-FXE four-cylinder engines.
The 1AZ-FE (2.0 litre), the 2AZ-FE and the 2AZ-FXE (2.4 litre) are Toyota four-cylinder engines. They power the Toyota Camry, Avensis, Auris, Corolla, RAV4 and Alphard, as well as the Lexus ES and HS and the Scion tC and xB. These Toyota inline four-cylinder engines with an aluminium block, double overhead camshafts, 4 valves per cylinder and a timing chain displace 2.0 litres (1AZ-FE) and 2.4 litres (2AZ-FE, 2AZ-FXE).
Thrust washers take the clutch thrust and set the crankshaft end play. On a tuned engine with a reinforced clutch, this thrust increases. The uncoated ACL version restores the thrust washers to the original size.
Fitted on either side of a main bearing, the half washers hold the crankshaft in its axial position. They work every time the clutch is disengaged, when the clutch pushes the crankshaft against them. A worn washer lets the end float increase and the crankshaft shift, at the expense of its own thrust faces.

The lubrication grooves, present on one face of the half washer only, must face the crankshaft; the plain face rests against the block or cap. A reversed washer starves the crankshaft's thrust face of oil and damages it quickly.
Before fitting the cap, apply assembly grease to the crankshaft-side face and check that the half washers in the block are flush. The cap goes on without forcing and is then tightened according to the manufacturer's procedure. Finish by checking the end float with a dial gauge, to be compared with the manufacturer's value.

Half washers are inexpensive parts, but their wear is costly: excessive end float lets the crankshaft move at every disengagement and attacks its thrust faces, which then have to be machined, if the crankshaft does not need replacing. Changing them whenever the bottom end is opened, and always with an uprated clutch, avoids that expense.
