  • The Porsche 2.9 MA1.20 engine concerned

The Porsche MA1.20 is the naturally aspirated 2.9-litre six-cylinder petrol engine (2,893 cc) of the Boxster (987) from February 2009 to March 2012, from 211 to 255 hp, and of the Cayman (987) from February 2009 to June 2013, from 211 to 265 hp.

No ARP source gives the part number or the diameter of the original rod bolt for this engine; kit 204-6306, listed for the Porsche 987.2, replaces it on the original rods with ARP2000 bolts with a 12-point head.

Reinforced ARP bolts for connecting rods

At every revolution, the rod bolt takes the pull of the rod and piston assembly, which tries to force the cap away through inertia. As original equipment, it is sized for stock power and is replaced at every strip-down.

On the original MA1.20 rods, this kit takes the place of the factory bolts and brings ARP2000 bolts with a 12-point head. These bolts are made from ARP2000, an ARP-specific alloy steel heat treated to 220,000 psi tensile strength, with threads rolled once the treatment is complete. Classes 10.9 and 12.9 of standard fasteners start at 150,800 and 176,900 psi: ARP2000 exceeds them by 24 to 46%.

    Technical guide

The bolts are installed with ARP assembly grease, on the threads and under the head.

    The ARP brand ARP

Founded in the early 1970s by Gary Holzapfel, who came from the aerospace sector, ARP (Automotive Racing Products) was born to put an end to fastener-related engine failures in racing. Its thousands of part numbers, designed and manufactured in California for the cylinder head, the main bearings and the connecting rods, come in several materials depending on the application and are recognised for the consistency of their manufacture.

Important: This page covers only the 2.9-litre MA1.20: the other Boxster and Cayman engines, for example the 2.7-litre MA1.22, do not appear in the table and are not covered by this part number.

Why is it the most cost-effective solution?

If a rod bolt fails on an MA1.20, the rod can go through the block and destroy the piston as well as the crankshaft. A set of ARP bolts costs far less than rebuilding the bottom end.
