  • The Volvo engines covered

The B18A, B18B, B18D, B20A, B20B, B20E and B20F are 1.8 and 2.0-litre Volvo petrol engines with four cylinders in line and 8 valves. They power the Volvo 140, 240, P1800, Amazon (P120) and PV 544 models in the compatibility table below. An in-line four has a single cylinder head: allow for just one gasket per engine.

The original gaskets of these engines carry part numbers 913 9283 (B18D) and 913 928 (B20A, B20E and B20F). Volvo publishes neither their bore, nor their thickness, nor their construction. They are sized for standard pressures; when these rise, the clamping load drops, the head lifts and coolant seeps into a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

How well the gasket holds also depends on the fasteners, which press the head against the block. A composite gasket takes a permanent set beyond 100 N/mm²; the 301 stainless steel of MLS gaskets withstands up to 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and springs back after every combustion. On the B18 and B20, remember the head fasteners when reassembling.

This page groups 60 part numbers from a single competition manufacturer, Cometic (United States), all in MLS, multi-layer steel. Bores range from 86 to 94 mm and thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, enough to set the compression ratio to suit the build. As the engine has a single head, one gasket is enough: choose the bore and thickness you want. As a rule, the gasket bore chosen is at least 0.5 mm larger than the actual cylinder bore. Each part number is sold individually, one gasket per engine.

Gasket volume is the space it leaves above each piston. That space adds to the combustion chamber volume and lowers the compression ratio. Only compare gaskets of the same bore: here, from 86 to 94 mm, depending on the C4287, C4288, C4289, C14085 and H1828 series.

Before fitting, lay a straightedge across the head and the block deck, and have anything out of true machined. Cometic gaskets arrive pre-coated: do not add sealant, as it does nothing useful and upsets the clamping load. On a B18 or a B20, take the opportunity to check the condition of the studs before closing up.

    Technical guide

    The construction offered

Cometic MLS cylinder head gasketCometic MLS
Several stainless steel sheets, stamped then riveted into a single stack. The outer sheets carry active beads around each cylinder and each fluid passage. Sealing comes with a moderate clamping torque and the bore moves little: a versatile construction, from the tuned naturally aspirated engine to the medium-boost turbo. On a B18 or a B20, this is the construction offered here for every part number.

    Choosing bore and thickness

    Gasket bore. The Cometic MLS comes in 86 mm (C4287), 90 mm (C4288), 92 mm (C4289), 93 mm (C14085 and H1828SP1030S, 1036S, 1045S, 1066S) and 94 mm (H1828SP3080S).

Thickness. Volvo gives no thickness figure for its standard gasket. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratioOriginal thickness unknown: measure the removed gasket, then choose the closest of the 18 thicknesses from 0.69 to 3.56 mm
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost heightMatch the 18 thicknesses, from 0.69 to 3.56 mm, against that of the removed gasket plus the material taken off in machining
Forced induction build, lower the ratio3.556 mm, if the removed gasket is thinner
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratio0.686 mm, if the removed gasket is thicker

With no published original thickness, measure with a dial gauge how high the pistons rise above the block deck before ordering, especially if you want a gasket thinner than the one removed: it sets the clearance left between piston and head, on a B18 as on a B20.

    The brand

CometicCometic Gasket, Inc. is an American company specialising in gaskets and engine sealing, founded in 1989 and based in Concord, Ohio. It cuts each gasket to order, at the bore and thickness required, and makes it entirely in the United States from American raw materials. Its MLS gaskets on this page cover the Volvo B18 and B20.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 86 to 94 mm bores of the gaskets offered covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

    OEM part number: 913 9283, 913 928.

Important: these part numbers are for the B18A, B18B, B18D, B20A, B20B, B20E and B20F engines: check your vehicle's engine code before ordering, then choose the bore and thickness you want.

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

Where the original gasket gives up, the reinforced one holds: at higher combustion pressure the steel MLS keeps its shape without crushing. That is the case for a tuned B18 or B20, carburetted or fuel-injected.

With a turbo, a supercharger or a raised compression ratio, the head gasket is the first part to give way in the top end. Choosing a reinforced one from the start avoids the leak and the far costlier head removal that follows: better to invest before the build than after the failure. The B18 and B20 date from the 1960s and 1970s: on engines of that age, a reinforced gasket saves reopening the head after every power gain.
