Toyota 4A-GE 20-valve engine covered
This kit is aimed at the 1.6 litre Toyota 4A-GE four-cylinder with 20 valves, five per cylinder, built with Silver Top and Black Top heads. From 1987 to 2001 it powered the Corolla, Corolla Levin, Sprinter and Carina VII.
The kit's single springs take the place of the factory ones; the standard collets keep being used.
SUPERTECH reinforced valve spring kit
After each opening, the valve goes back onto its seat under the spring and is pressed against the tappet. As revs climb, too low a load lets it bounce: it comes back late and could strike the piston, the fault known as valve float.
Seat pressure: 240 N at 36.6 mm for both the SPRK-A2095-BT and the SPRK-A2095-ST (single springs).

The Black Top kit contains 20 single springs, 20 RET-TC50/T1 upper retainers and 20 SS-3021 lower spring seats; the Silver Top kit contains 20 single springs and 20 RET-TC50/T1 upper retainers. The original collets are kept.
Installed height: the length measured, valve shut, separating the lower spring seat (on which the spring rests) from the upper retainer. The quoted seat pressure is guaranteed at this length only. When it increases, for example with re-cut seats, the load decreases at a pace set by the spring rate; the table below sums up the values.

Technical guide
Our brands
| SUPERTECH is based in California, has existed for over thirty years and supplies builders of racing engines. Its springs are coiled from chrome-silicon-vanadium wire. Each batch is inspected with ultrasound, X-ray imaging and a laser gauge before it leaves the workshop. |
How to choose
A higher load holds the valve against the cam far past the original engine speed: the limiter can go up, a livelier camshaft or a turbo can join in, with no float. Both kits provide 240 N at the seat at 36.6 mm, as the height table recalls. One requirement only: the camshaft must not lift more than the kit's maximum lift, 13.6 mm.
| Criterion | Key point |
|---|---|
| Choosing the pressure | That load is also printed as 54 lbs, which is 240 N at the installed height of 36.6 mm. To decide whether it is enough, compare three figures: how far the cam lifts, the revs you aim for and any boost pressure. The higher they climb, the harder the spring works. Aiming higher does not always pay: too much load needlessly wears cam lobes and tappets. |
| Single or double spring | Each kit is built on the same single spring SPR-A2095, wound from one wire. SUPERTECH offers them for one head version apiece: Black Top with the SPRK-A2095-BT, Silver Top with the SPRK-A2095-ST. Only the Black Top also includes 20 SS-3021 lower spring seats; the RET-TC50/T1 upper retainers are shared. |
When reinforced springs become necessary
- Cam grind lifting higher than stock
- Engine speed ceiling you want to raise
- Turbo or blower bolted onto this 4A-GE
- Head refreshed for circuit, rally or hill climbs
- Tired springs: valves float before the limiter
