The Toyota A-series engines

The Toyota 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A and 7A engines (codes 1A, 2A, 2A-L, 1AC, 3A, 4A-C, 4A-F, 4A-FE, 4A-GE, 4A-GEC, 4A-GELC, 4A-GZE, 4A-LC, 5A-F, 5A-FE, 6A-FC and 7A-FE) power the Toyota Corolla, Celica, Carina, Caldina, Avensis, Sprinter, MR2, Tercel and Corona, among others. The A-series engines, built from 1978 to 2006 from 1.3 to 1.8 litres, are inline four-cylinders with a cast-iron block and aluminium cylinder head and a timing belt, in SOHC or DOHC form.

Thrust washers

Thrust washers take the clutch thrust and set the crankshaft end play. On a tuned engine with a reinforced clutch, this thrust increases. The uncoated ACL version restores the thrust washers to the original size. The King version, in lead-free Al20Sn1Cu aluminium, is certified by its manufacturer to meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.

Each half washer has lubrication grooves on one face. This face fits on the crankshaft side, with the smooth face towards the block or cap. Fitted the wrong way round, the washer deprives the crankshaft bearing face of lubrication and wears it quickly.

Before fitting, coat the crankshaft-side face with assembly grease. Check that the half washers in the block sit flush, fit the cap without forcing it and tighten it following the manufacturer's procedure. Then check the end play with a dial gauge and compare it with the manufacturer's value.

	ACL Bearing Company, an Australian manufacturer of high-performance engine bearings since 1949, supplies uncoated thrust washers for these engines.
	King Engine Bearings, an Israeli engine bearing manufacturer since the 1960s, offers its OE Replacement range thrust washers in lead-free aluminium bi-metal.
