The MINI W11B16A is a 1.6-litre 16-valve four-cylinder petrol engine developed under the Tritec joint venture between BMW and Chrysler and built in Brazil. Its signature feature is an Eaton belt-driven supercharger (M45 type), which delivers instant low-end response and the distinctive soundtrack of the first BMW-era Cooper S.
Fitted to the Cooper S R53 hatchback and the Cooper S R52 convertible, it was rated at 163 hp at 6,000 rpm at launch, rising to 170 hp from September 2004 thanks to a revised supercharger pulley and an improved intercooler. The John Cooper Works version, first a dealer kit and later a factory build, pushed the engine to 218 hp on the 2006 GP limited edition. These gains in power and boost pressure place heavy loads on the reciprocating assembly, which is why an upgraded rod set makes sense as soon as the build gets serious.
Machined from high-strength 4340 steel, these forged connecting rods reinforce the bottom end as soon as power climbs. They become essential when fitting forged pistons, raising supercharger boost or chasing higher rpm, all situations where the standard rod, sized for factory use, reaches its limits.
Designed to absorb the stresses of built engines, whether supercharged or turbocharged, they suit every discipline (rally, drift, drag, circuit and track days, hillclimb, time attack) and support Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4+ builds, all the way to competition engines.

Manufacturers use the stretch-gauge method as the reference: the instructions supplied with the kit always take precedence. The stated torque figures apply to assembly with ARP lubricant.
| 4340 steel is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy used in aerospace as well as in motorsport. Forged then heat-treated by quenching and tempering, it combines high tensile strength, excellent fatigue life and genuine ductility. Compared with a standard rod, usually sintered metal optimised for production cost, a forged 4340 rod gains around +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and +19 to +37% fatigue strength, meaning a service life under cyclic load several times longer. This is why forged 4340 remains the reference material once boost and rpm rise. |

The rod bolt is among the most heavily loaded parts in the engine. The key is to match the ARP grade to the real use of the build, then to follow the assembly torque and stretch to the letter.

Rated up to 200 hp per cylinder in 3/8", and up to 8,500 rpm, it is the most common grade in circuit, track day, drift, rally, drag and hillclimb use, valued for its strength, reliability and versatility, with no particular storage constraints. | |
![]() | L19 (tensile strength around 260,000 psi, roughly 1,793 MPa) is designed for engines pushed to the extreme, up to 250 hp per cylinder in 3/8", and up to 10,000 rpm: very high boost pressure, sustained high rpm and elevated cylinder pressure. It is the choice for big-power builds in drag, drift, rally and circuit. Note: it is sensitive to corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement, so it must be stored and fitted oiled, away from moisture. |

| Beyond torque tightening, measuring connecting-rod bolt stretch is the most reliable check for reaching the target preload. It is done with the bolt fitted: the dial gauge bears on both ends of the bolt and reads its actual stretch, which must match the recommended value (see the torque and stretch table above). By removing the friction variations inherent to torque tightening, this method secures the assembly on heavily stressed engines. |

When a standard bottom end fails (a broken, bent or scored rod), simply returning to factory specification often means replacing both the rods and the pistons, damaged at the same time. The bill climbs quickly for a repair that brings no gain.
For a comparable budget, sometimes lower, forged 4340 rods paired with forged pistons deliver far greater reliability and safety margin, plus real room to raise power. It is the route chosen by European engine builders for more than fifteen years.
