Kit of 16 valve guides for the Toyota 4A-GE 16V, 6.0 mm stem.
This kit concerns the 16-valve cylinder head of the naturally aspirated 1.6 litre Toyota 4A-GE, fitted to the Corolla AE86 and Sprinter AE82, the Corolla AE92 and Levin, the Celica AA63, the Carina V AT171 and the Conquest RSi.
The original valves of this engine have a stem of 5.969 to 5.984 mm. The same SUPERTECH guide serves inlet and exhaust; the kit supplies 16 of them, as two sets of 8, and the manufacturer pairs it with the reduced VS-T6SM stem seal.
As the valve's bearing part, the guide stops it drifting from its seat, carries part of the stem heat into the cylinder head and holds the seal in place. Once worn, it becomes too wide: the valve wobbles, no longer seats squarely, oil slides down the stem and blue smoke, a dropping oil level and weaker compression appear.
These guides are machined by SUPERTECH from manganese bronze, a copper alloy that, according to the brand, transfers heat markedly better than the original sintered guides. Their natural place is alongside reinforced valves. Two sets of 8 make up the kit, i.e. the 16 guides of the head, inlet and exhaust alike.
