The Nissan SR20 four-cylinder engines

The SR20DE, SR20DET and SR20VE are 2.0-litre Nissan four-cylinder engines with an aluminium block, double overhead camshafts and 16 valves, introduced in 1989. They are fitted to the 200SX S13 to S15, Silvia, 180SX, Primera, Sunny and Almera, among others. From the factory, Nissan fits them with thrust washers 12280-60J00.

Thrust washers

Thrust washers take the clutch thrust and set the crankshaft end play. On a modified engine, with a turbo or an uprated clutch, this thrust increases. Compared with the original parts, the ACL Calico version adds a dry film lubricant that reduces friction and wear and protects the thrust face when oil is lacking. The King version, in lead-free Al20Sn1Cu aluminium, is certified by its manufacturer to meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer's specifications.

Each half washer has oil grooves on one face. This face goes towards the crankshaft, the flat face towards the block or cap. Fitted the wrong way round, the washer starves the crankshaft thrust face of oil and quickly damages it.

Before fitting, coat the crankshaft-side face with assembly lube. Check that the half washers in the block sit flush, fit the cap without force and tighten it to the manufacturer's procedure. Then check the end play with a dial indicator and compare it with the manufacturer's value.

The two brands

	ACL Bearing Company, an Australian manufacturer of high-performance engine bearings since 1949. Its Calico coating lowers oil temperature by 8 to 11 °C according to its tests.
	King Engine Bearings, an Israeli engine bearing manufacturer since the 1960s. Its OE Replacement (AM) range thrust washers are made of lead-free aluminium.
