  • The Citroën Peugeot EW10J4S engine

    The PSA EW10J4S is a 2.0-litre 16-valve four-cylinder petrol engine developed by the Peugeot Citroën group, derived from the EW engine family. With an 85 mm bore and an 88 mm stroke (1,997 cc), twin overhead camshafts and an 11:1 compression ratio, it delivers 177 hp (130 kW) and 202 N·m in its most accomplished version.

    Fitted to the group’s sporting versions, the EW10J4S powers the Peugeot 206 RC, the Citroën C4 VTS and the Peugeot 307 and 307 CC. A favourite among tuners, it readily accepts power increases, both in high-output naturally aspirated form and in turbo conversions: this is precisely where its connecting rods reach their limit and where a set of forged connecting rods becomes essential.

    Forged connecting rods

    Machined from high-strength 4340 steel, forged connecting rods secure the bottom end as soon as power rises. They become essential when switching to forged pistons, raising the rev limit, increasing boost pressure or gaining displacement, all situations where the original rod reaches its limit.

    Designed to withstand the heavy loads of tuned engines (turbo as well as supercharger), these forged connecting rods cover every discipline (rally, drift, drag, circuit and track use, hillclimb, time attack) and support Stage 2, Stage 3 and Stage 4+ builds, all the way to competition engines.

    4340 forged steel: what is it?

    4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel used in aerospace as well as in motorsport. Forged and then heat-treated (quench and temper), it combines high tensile strength, excellent fatigue resistance and real ductility. Compared with an original rod (often sintered/powder metal, optimised for mass-production cost), a 4340 forged rod gains roughly +19% yield strength, +8% tensile strength and, above all, +19 to +37% fatigue strength, meaning a service life under cyclic load several times longer. This is what makes forged 4340 the reference material as soon as boost and engine speed rise.

    Connecting rod profiles

    H-Beam profile. Its “H” section provides high rigidity and excellent resistance to bending and compression. Slightly heavier than an I-beam rod, it prioritises strength: the choice for high-torque engines, large displacements and drag racing. On a reinforced, tuned EW10J4S, the H-beam profile is a safe bet.

    How to choose your rod bolts?Logo ARP

    The rod bolt is one of the most heavily loaded parts of the engine. The key is to match the ARP grade to the real use of the build, then to strictly follow the specified assembly torque and stretch.

    Vis de bielle forgée ARP2000ARP 2000 (tensile strength ~220,000 psi, i.e. ~1,517 MPa) is the high-performance standard. Suitable for builds up to 200 hp per cylinder in 3/8", and up to 8,500 rpm, it is the most common grade in circuit, trackday, drift, rally, drag and hillclimb, recognised for its robustness, reliability and versatility, with no particular storage constraint.
    Vis de bielle forgée ARP L19ARP L19 (tensile strength ~260,000 psi, i.e. ~1,793 MPa) is designed for engines pushed to the extreme, up to 250 hp per cylinder in 3/8", and up to 10,000 rpm: very high boost pressure, sustained high rpm and high cylinder pressure. It is the choice for big-power builds: drag racing, drift, rally and circuit. Note: sensitive to corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement, it must be stored and fitted oiled, away from moisture.

    Beyond torque tightening, measuring rod-bolt stretch is the most reliable check for achieving optimal preload. The operation is performed with the bolt fitted: place the dial indicator on both ends of the bolt and read the actual stretch obtained, which must match the recommended value (see the torque and stretch table above). This method eliminates the friction variations inherent in torque tightening and secures the assembly on heavily loaded engines.

    When an original bottom end fails (a rod broken, bent or scored), returning to the factory configuration means replacing the connecting rods and the pistons, which are often damaged at the same time. The bill rises quickly, for a mere restoration.
