  • The Ford engines covered

The Ford 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines, identified by the codes M1DA, M1DC, M1DD, M1DH, M2DA, M2DB, M2DC, M1CA, M1CB, M1JE, M1JH, M1JL, M1JM, M1JP, SFDA, SFDB, SFDC, SFJA, SFJB, SFJC, SFJD, SFJE, SFJF, SFJH, SFJJ, SFJK, SFJN, SFJP, Y7JA, YYJA, YYJB, YYJE, YYJG, B7DA, B7DC, B7JA, B7JB, B7JC, B7JE, B7JG, B3DA, M0DC, M0JA, M0JB, M0JD, Q0JA, Q0JB, Q0JC, Q0JD and BZJA, power the Fiesta, Focus, B-MAX, C-MAX, Mondeo, Puma, Tourneo Courier and Transit Courier detailed below, from 2012 to 2025. With a single cylinder head, the gasket is sold individually: one is needed per engine.

The original gasket carries the part numbers 1 771 609, 1 857 022 and 2207975, depending on the engine. Ford publishes neither its bore, nor its thickness, nor its construction. It is sized for standard combustion pressure: when that rises, the clamping load eases off, the head lifts and coolant reaches a cylinder.

    Reinforced cylinder head gaskets

The head gasket is not alone in ensuring the seal: the fasteners that clamp the head to the block contribute just as much. A composite gasket sags for good beyond 100 N/mm², whereas the 301 stainless steel of the MLX withstands 517 N/mm², 5 times more, and regains its shape at every combustion.

This page describes the part numbers of Cometic, the American maker of competition gaskets, in a single construction: the MLX with its chamber stopper. The bore is 73 mm and the thicknesses run from 0.71 to 1.27 mm, enough to adjust the compression ratio without touching the pistons or the cylinder head. As a rule, the gasket bore chosen is at least 0.5 mm larger than the actual cylinder bore. The part numbers are sold separately, individually. As the engine has just one cylinder head, order a single part number per engine, according to the thickness wanted.

The volume of a gasket is the room it makes above each cylinder. It adds to the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio the more, the larger it is. Only compare these figures between gaskets of the same bore.

When fitting, check with a straightedge that the head and block faces are true, and have them resurfaced if needed. These gaskets go on dry: Cometic supplies them already coated, so no sealant is to be added.

    Technical guide

    The construction offered

Cometic MLX cylinder head gasketCometic MLX
A multilayer stainless steel gasket whose centre sheet is folded into a stopper around the combustion chamber, under a high-temperature coating. The clamping load concentrates where it is useful without distorting the bore any further. It is the toughest of the all-steel gaskets, to be kept for severe boost; here it only comes in 73 mm.

    Choosing bore and thickness

Gasket bore. The Cometic MLX only comes here in 73 mm, in seven thicknesses.

Thickness. Ford publishes no thickness for the original gasket. A thicker gasket enlarges the combustion chamber and lowers the compression ratio; a thinner one reduces it and raises the ratio.

    Your goalThickness to choose
Keep the original compression ratioOriginal thickness not published: measure the removed gasket and pick, between 0.71 and 1.27 mm, the closest figure
Skimmed cylinder head, make up the lost heightBetween 0.71 and 1.27 mm, start from the thickness of the removed gasket, plus the metal taken off when resurfacing
Forced induction build, lower the ratio1.27 mm, if the removed gasket is thinner
Naturally aspirated build, raise the ratio0.71 mm, if the removed gasket is thicker

With no published original thickness, use a dial gauge to measure how far the pistons stand above the block deck, especially after resurfacing: this figure gives the clearance left between piston and cylinder head.

    The brand

CometicCometic Gasket, Inc. is an American company founded in 1989 in Concord, Ohio. It makes gaskets and sealing solutions for engines, its speciality being the gasket cut to order, in the bore and thickness wanted. All production stays in the United States, from American materials.

When a reinforced gasket becomes necessary

    • Adding forced induction, or raising boost on an already turbocharged engine
    • Cylinder rebored beyond what the 73 mm bore of the gasket offered covers
    • Looking for a compression ratio different from standard, higher or lower
    • Engine that has already lost its gasket, or is consuming coolant
    • Competition use, where the gasket goes through repeated temperature rises

Why switch to a reinforced gasket?

When the original gasket is at the end of its tether, the reinforced one carries on: under higher combustion pressure, it holds its shape and is not crushed.

As soon as power climbs, with a bigger turbo, a supercharger or a raised compression ratio, the head gasket is the first link to fail at the top of the engine. A reinforced gasket rules out the failure, and with it the head removal, far costlier than the part.
