Kit of ARP 8740 cylinder head studs for the Honda and Acura B18A1 four-cylinder without VTEC (Integra).
This kit fits the 16-valve inline four-cylinder Honda and Acura B18A1 of 1.8 litres, without VTEC, fitted notably to the second-generation Acura Integra.
On the B18A1, the standard cylinder head bolts give way to the studs of ARP kit 208-4302.
Every combustion cycle pushes the cylinder head upwards. The head fasteners resist it by keeping a constant clamping pressure on the gasket; if that pressure drops, the seal is no longer guaranteed.
For this engine ARP lists just one stud kit: reference 208-4302, in 8740, with 12-point nuts and 7/16 in thread. Per its instruction sheet, the studs go into the block hand tight first; the cylinder head follows, then the nuts and washers, coated with the ARP Ultra-Torque lubricant supplied, are tightened in three equal passes following the manufacturer's sequence. 8740 is a chrome-molybdenum steel, rated by ARP at 200,000 psi tensile strength. As a reference point, an engine's standard fasteners mostly belong to property classes 10.9 and 12.9, with a minimum tensile strength between 150,800 and 176,900 psi. In 7/16 in, the 8740 studs hold up to 600 hp on this four-cylinder engine (calculated estimate).
| Part number | Brand | Grade / material | Nuts | Thread |
| ARP-208-4302 | ARP | 8740 | 12-point | 7/16 in |
| Part number | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 |
| ARP-208-4302 | 36 Nm | 72 Nm | 108 Nm |
The studs are fitted into the block by hand, without a torque wrench. For a permanent installation, the instruction sheet accepts thread locker, with tightening to be completed before it sets.
The instruction sheet calls for cleaning all the block threads, chasing them if needed with the matching ARP tool.
Where the studs open into the water jacket, the sheet specifies ARP thread sealer on the block end of the threads.
Final tightening is done in three successive stages, following the manufacturer's tightening sequence; these torque figures only hold with ARP assembly lubricant on the threads and under the nuts.
The washers also receive ARP lubricant, as stated in the instruction sheet.
The torque figures above come from ARP instruction sheet 208-4302, revision applicable on the day the page went online. The official instruction sheet prevails in case of difference and describes the complete procedure, tightening sequence included. Read the ARP 208-4302 instruction sheet
The stated tightening torques only make sense with ARP assembly grease, applied to the threads and under the nuts.

| Gary Holzapfel, a former aerospace engineer, created ARP (Automotive Racing Products) in the early 1970s to tackle engine failures caused by insufficiently strong fasteners in racing. Today the brand develops and manufactures thousands of parts in California, available in several material grades as needed. |

Standard fasteners remain suitable as long as the engine keeps its original combustion pressure. They reach their limits in the following cases:
| Model | Engine code | Power | Years |
| Acura Integra LS/GS 2nd generation (DA9/DB1) | B18A1 | 130 hp | 1990-1991 |
| Acura Integra LS/GS 2nd generation (DA9/DB1) | B18A1 | 140 hp | 1992-1993 |
The original B18A1 head fasteners are sized for stock power: as soon as the build goes beyond it, they limit how well the gasket holds. A kit of ARP 8740 studs brings a higher clamp load for a cost well below that of redoing a cylinder head, gasket and labour included.
Reinforced fasteners are only fully worthwhile with a head gasket able to resist the same pressure. We offer the following part for this engine:
