The 8-valve TU5 is a 1,587 cc PSA four-cylinder, built as the TU5JP and the TU5J2; Peugeot fitted it to the 106, 206 and 306 1.6 between 1993 and 2003.

Each cylinder has one inlet valve and one exhaust valve: the engine therefore has 4 exhaust valves, with a 7 mm stem, exposed to the flow of burnt gases on every cycle.

The head of an exhaust valve on a naturally aspirated engine runs between 760 and 870 °C (metal temperature). It cools mainly through its seat, which removes about 75 % of the heat, the guide taking nearly 20 %. An EV8 family steel drops from 550 MPa at 600 °C to 300 MPa at 800 °C: beyond that, the head overheats, fatigues, distorts and the seal deteriorates.

For the 8-valve TU5, CATCAMS makes the 9249009M, offered here as a set of 4: 31.3 mm head, 7 mm stem, 111.5 mm length.

For the 8-valve TU5, CATCAMS only offers the 9249009M on the exhaust side.

Valve fitting

The 9249009M is fitted with MK7 collets: check that they sit properly in the valve groove before compressing the springs.

The cylinder head guides take a 7 mm stem; check their clearance before fitting the new valves.

The exhaust seats are reground during the rebuild, so that each valve seats over its full width.
